Interview with Mark, done in '98
Hi Groinchurn! How are you? Do you want to tell us your story?
Hi, we are fine, thanks. We have just completed the recording of the new Cd on Morbid records!! Our short history: we started in 1994, did some demos and split tapes, got some stuff released on vinyl (some 7"s and split 7"s). Songs on the 'four ways to misery' Cd with three other bands. Then we self released our first Cd 'Sixtimesnine', after which, thanks to organizing from morbid records, we did a tour in Europe with Krabathor and Sanity's Dawn. We then signed to Morbid records for our next Cd which should be out around July/ August '98!
Groinchurn. Why this name? What do you think about porno grind bands?
Umm... we liked how it sounded, so we used it. It doesn't have any special meaning... Porno bands? Well, I liked Gut's 7" stuff but other than that, I don't like any of the bands. As far as the porno goes, I don't care. I'm not for it or against it.
For which reason some bold South African boys resolve to start a grind band?
Sergio and I were playing in a death metal band called Sepsis and we wanted to do something faster, heavier and more aggressive, so we started Groichurn and ask Christo to join on bass/vocals. For us it is both about music and an attitude and a way of thinking. We're not in a band for a 'cool image' or anything. We do Groinchurn because it's natural part of our life. It's what we do.
According to you, which are the most interesting South African bands Here in Italy the most known are you and some metal bands as V.O.D. or Metalmorphosis...
My personal favorite friends and cool band is 'Infectious Outbreak' that play hc/grind and are cool guys. We also played a gig with a band called Seed. They play 90's style hc/metal stuff and are pretty cool. A very good live band and cool guys. I just heard that Metalmorphosis split up.
In South Africa seems to be a (little) grind/metal/hc scene, but nothing in the rest of Africa. Why, according to you? Do you think that grind/hc is 'white music'?
I don't really know... in Namibia there is a cool band called Arcana XXII (Paradise Lost/ Black Sabbath style with Johan ex V.O.D. on Guitar) and in Botswana there is a band called Metal Orison with all black members, but in South Africa, most black people only like R+B, soul, and all that shit.
Can you play live in your nation? There're clubs for rock bands, squats, youth centers?
Yes, we play live quite a lot. We recently did some shows around South Africa with Krabathor. It was cool. There are mostly some clubs, but sometimes people organize other events like some halls...
Which are the cultures that you feel closer?
If you mean music, then I don't know: I listen to a lot of different music. Other than that, I don't know either! Ha, ha!!
Do you know any Italian bands? Have you ever heard Carmen Consoli?
Yes, we did a cover of Cripple Bastards on our new Cd! I also know some other bands like Timebomb, Growing Concern, Homicide but not so many...
Who are the Groinchurn in their 'normal life'? Are you workers? Unemployed? Owners of diamond mines?
I'm a worker, Sergio is unemployed and Christo owns a diamond mine!
Projects for the future?
Well, soon we will have out: 'Fink', new Cd on Morbid records, 'Already dead' 3" Cd on Happy Hamster rec., split 7" with Haemorrage on Morbid, 'Sixtimesnine' 10" picture Lp on Fudgeworm rec. Also we will do another tour in Europe later in 1998!
Ok! That's all! Say something clever for the readers of Domina'zine that survived this interview...
