Red Jezebel
Red Jezebel have released an EP, they've been on an Australian tour with Jebediah and we thought it was time to talk to Chris from the band.

How many members are in Red Jezebel and who does what?

There are 4 of us: Mark, who plays bass, Chris, who plays guitar and sometimes sings, Paul who plays guitar and sings and Alex who drums.

How did you all meet up?

Alex and Paul and Chris were old family friends and Mark was in Chris's year at school, we actually went to the same school, but were in different years.

How did you come across the name of your band?

A freind of ours worked for Coles. It is the Coles/Myer fire warning signal.

How does a song come from no-where, to making it into your setlist?

We usually have a basic structure of a song sorted and then we pick at bits and add stuff. We tend to be a bit picky so we stew over things for a while before we play it live.

What do you hope to achieve when you play live?

I think winning over people that have never seen us live is pretty important, it was hard to do that on the tour we did with Jebediah.

Comment on your past recordings and then your next release.

Well our old cd (Joyful Possibilities) was pretty good, the prodution was pretty basic but that was the most we could afford back then. The new cd "In Transit" comes out in 3 weeks and we have tried to make the recording sound the best it can so it has a better chance over east.

Name some Perth / Australian bands that you like and why?

Not From There - different sounds, makes me wanna learn German. Bodyjar - I have never really been exposed to this style much, except for whats on the radio. These guys are unbelievable live and impressed me so much on tour. Anodyne 500 - The BEST guitar sound you can get.

Where and when was your best gig to date and why?

For me one of the best was with Jebediah at Metropolis Fremantle, lotsa people and it was great to play to people who knew our songs.

Comment on the Perth music industry.

It is pretty hard in Perth to do well, the scene here seems pretty segmented; you have metal bands, rock bands, pop bands all seperated. It would be good to see bands diversifying who they play with and still have a crowd coming to see everyone play. It may help the scene by getting together a bit more rather than splitting up into bits and peices.

Can a Perth band make it in Perth, or do they need to go over-east?

Bands need to have a real focus on being successful if they want to make it. It really is a massive commitment and I think that the stresses are different for bands who go over east and those that stay here. You can "make it" here but it aint going to be easy over there either!

What was it like touring Australia with Jebediah and did it help your exposure?

It was awesome, both exposure wise and getting to travel and play your music. It is really great to be able to play out of your home town and then meet someone after the gig who bought your CD.
