Established in 1884, the Alpha Boys' School has produced more great musicians in Jamaica than any other institution in say the last century or so. Many of Alpha's boys did not know their real parents. They were also not necessarily Roman Catholics.
The Alpha Boys' Band started as a drum and fife corps in 1893. Fifteen years later, the school obtained a number of brass instruments and the band as it is known today, began.
"Known as "Jamaica's Nursery For Brass Band music", the Alpha Boys School band has earned an international reputation for excellence through "Music in Education". ..inside it's spacious Lenny Hibbert Music Hall, the walls are adorned with memorabilia honoring the achivements of Alpha School graduates. Don Drummond has his corner amid fellow Alpha 'old boys' such as Joe Harriot, Bertie King, Dizzy Reece, Dudley Farrier, Harold "Little G" Gaynair, Joe Bennett, Wilton Gaynair, Headley Bennett, Eddie "TanTan Thornton, Raymond Harper, Ron Wilson, Rico Rodriguez and Bobby Ellis." Brian Keyo hat Schwester Ignatia (b. 1921 - d. 2003)und viele ihrer Schüler aufgesucht (und verarbeitet die Ergebnisse z.Zt. wahrscheinlich in einer Skatalites Biographie). Sie kannt Don Drummond, Lester Sterling und Dizzy Moore aus deren Schulzeit, als sie sie in Musik unterrichtete. Damals waren es Ganztagsklassen, Musik macht noch heute einen großen Teil des Curriculums aus.
Aus der Schule gingen bis Ende der 50er Jahre tatsächlich fast alle wichtigen Sessionmusiker Jamaicas hervor, die die Grundlage für die eigenständige Schallplattenproduktion und für die Entwicklung des eigenen Musikstils seit Beginn der 60er Jahre verantwortlich zeichneten.
