Shawn
Colvin
Colvin Greatest Hits Album Cover Steady On Album Cover These Four Walls Album Cover A Few Small Repairs Album Cover
She "broke through" bigtime with "Sunny Came Home," yet she was out on the road for more than 10 years paving the way for that song's eventual success. She simply has one of the most beautiful voices on the planet, writes exquisite poems/lyrics, and is an interpreter extraordinaire while covering the likes of Sting, Warren Zevon, and Greg Brown. Shawn's latest is These Four Walls, released in September, 2006.

Gavin DeGraw Gavin DeGraw Album Cover
At a time when I hadn't come across any new music I connected with in quite some time, along came this album from Gavin Degraw. When I heard the melodies, and the mix of guitars and keyboards, I was drawn to listen to it over and over in a way that I hadn't been drawn to any record in the recent past. Missed seeing him live due to illness (on two occasions!) but I understand from reliable sources he's a good concert performer as well.

John
Denver
Poems, Prayers, and Promises Cover Art John Denver's Greatest Hits Cover Art Seasons of the Heart Cover Art The Wildlife Concert Cover Art
It hasn't always been "hip" to say you liked this guy. But I grew up on the Greatest Hits, and when I go back and revisit those songs, I can't find a thing wrong with 'em. Sorry. Fact is, they've mostly held up pretty well, as opposed to a lot of other 70's fare. (OK, not every last one, but most of 'em!) And geez, what the man could do with 3 or 4 chords! I'll miss this guy. Seasons of the Heart is a very underappreciated album. A word of caution about the box set released just prior to his death....the versions on that set are the ORIGINALS, not the re-recordings done for the first Greatest Hits album. A few of them sound quite different. If you're a big fan of John's and just starting to collect CD's, you may find you'll want to have both.
What one man can do.......

Steve
Earle
Guitar Town Album Cover Copperhead Road Album Cover Die Like An Aviator Album Cover I Feel Alright Album Cover
I first perceived Steve Earle as being part of a new breed of country performer. Somewhere along the way, he began to sound more like John Mellencamp, and lately seems to have settled into a roots-rock niche somewhere in between. Either way, he's a fine songwriter, certainly has lots of interesting experiences to write about, and is a SURVIVOR. Shut Up and Die... is a live album which will give you an excellent feel for what his stage show is like with the band.

Dan
Fogelberg
Very Best Album Art 2000 Live Album Art First Christmas Album Art Full Circle Album Art
Fogelberg has been my favorite recording artist for some 30 years now. His is a rare combination of talents. Melody, lyricism, harmony, musicianship, the willingness to stretch boundaries and explore new genres - Fogelberg clearly has the whole musical package in abundance. I've collected my thoughts about Fogelberg on a page I call Recollections of a Fogelberg Fan. Dan's latest is Full Circle, released in May, 2003.
There's magic every moment......miracles each day...

John
Fogerty
Premonition Cover
I had the pleasure of seeing Fogerty and band in May, 1997, just after the release of Blue Moon Swamp, and several times subsequently. This band ROCKS!!! Latest is Revival, John's first album of new material since his return to Fantasy Records.

Steve
Forbert
What Kinda Guy Cover Art Rock While I Can Rock Cover Just Like There's Nothing To It Cover Live at the Bottom Line
There are knowledgable music fans who think of Steve Forbert as a "one-hit-wonder." Not the case at all. Forbert released four wonderful albums for the Nemperor label before dropping out of the music business for several years due to various litigations with the label. In the late 80's, he resurfaced on Geffen Records with the release of The Streets of This Town, now summarized on the Geffen retrospective Rock While I Can Rock. What Kinda Guy is a "best of" collection covering the years he recorded for Nemporer, and includes the hit single, "Romeo's Tune" from 1979, a song recently covered by Keith Urban on his Greatest Hits. Like John Hiatt, this is an outstanding songwriter with a lot to say and a great sense of humor. Most of these albums are available at a budget or midline price.
And remember, you cannot win...if you do not play......

John
Gorka
Land of the Bottom Line
Album Cover Pure John Gorka Album Cover The Company You Keep
Album Cover
I first came across Gorka on a Windham Hill compilation album called Legacy in late '89, I believe it was. Current Minnesota resident has a deep baritone voice, and can be VERY intense and introspective at times, although a sense of humor is almost always evident. More recent material is a touch more upbeat than the early stuff. (I know people who only like him when he's miserable and cynical!) Strengths run more toward lyricism than melody.
He's from New Jersey......
