The name for the band comes from a 1943 poem titled "Our Lady Peace" by American poet Mark Van Doren. Mark Van Doren is the father of the Charles Van Doren, who was involved in a game show scandal in the 1960's. This incident was the basis of the 1994 movie "Quiz Show".
Our Lady Peace was formed in Toronto, in 1992, by Mike Turner and Raine Maida. When their original group refused to get serious, Mike and Raine decided to audition more committed bandmates. Eventually, they found Chris Eacrett and Jeremy Taggart (who was only 17 at the time).
The musical influences for each member of Our Lady Peace are very diverse. Raine Maida admires many female vocalists such as Bjork, Tori Amos, Sheila Chandra, and Sinead O' Connor as well as male vocalists Jeff Buckley and Otis Redding. Mike Turner was influenced by such punk bands as The Sex Pistols, The Jam and Boomtown Rats. Jeremy Taggart was brought up listening to Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Chris Eacrett brought to the mix a heavy metal bass influence by listening to such band as Rage Against The Machine, and Living Color.
Raine was at the University of Toronto, majoring in criminology. Chris was studying marketing at Ryerson University in Toronto, while Jeremy was finishing high school. Mike, who is originally from Bradford, England, was working in a machine shop. He has a degree in English from the University of Western Ontario. Duncan was working as a set dresser for the TV series Due South and playing in the band Blue Heavies.
The band and Chris felt that they were moving in different directions, both musically and personally and decided it would be best if they parted ways.

With limited finances, the band went to Arnyard Studios to record a three-song demo. Raine and a friend passed the demo tape around to several labels at New York CMJ music conference in 1993. Geffen and Interscope showed an interest in the band which then caught the attention of other labels including Sony Music Canada. The band ended up signing with Sony in Canada and later with Relativity Records in the United States.
"Naveed" is the bands debut album. It was released in Canada in May 1994 through Sony Music Canada and one year later in the United States through Relativity Records. The song titles are:
1. The Birdman 2. Supersatellite 3. Starseed 4. Hope 5. Naveed 6. Dirty Walls 7. Julia 8. Is it safe? 9. Denied 10. Under Zenith 11. Neon Crossing
In Canada, singles were released for: The Birdman, Supersatellite, Starseed, Hope, Naveed, and Julia.
In the U.S. the only singles released were Supersatellite, Starseed and Naveed.
Our Lady Peace's sophomore release "Clumsy" was released on Jan 21st in Canada on Sony Music Entertainment (Canada) and will be released in the US in early March on Columbia Records.
1. Superman's Dead 2. Automatic Flowers 3. Hello Oscar 4. Big Dumb Rocket 5. 4am 6. Shaking 7. Clumsy 8. Let You Down 9. Carnival 10. The Story of 100 Aisles 11. Car Crash
A single was released for Superman's Dead
Both albums were produced by Arnold Lanni and recorded at Arnyard Studios, in Weston ON Canada
Our Lady Peace recorded a cover of Neil Young's "The Needle And The Damage Done" on the double disc tribute album, "Borrowed Tunes" . A single disc version, with only half the artists, is also available and is titled, "Into The Black". Our Lady Peace's cover is also included on this album.
As well, Our Lady Peace recorded a cover of The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows". It was released exclusively on the Soundtrack the to the movie The Craft.
Naveed literally translated means "bearer of good news".
It is sanskrit for Our Lady Peace.
The band has shot videos for The Birdman, Starseed, Hope, Naveed, and Superman's Dead. All of the videos were released in Canada, while only Starseed and Naveed were released in the United States. In the early days of Our Lady Peace's career, they recorded an independent video for the song "Out of Here". This song was never recorded for an album, and is not believed to have been played in any live shows since Naveed was recorded.
The songs on Naveed can be interpreted in many different ways. For a pretty good rundown on what they're about you can see the synopsis on this web site.
The video was shot at the old Sears warehouse in Toronto. Interestingly, during the filming, there was an accident involving the lighting box. The lighting box was about three stories above the band and was set up to move up and down, as seen in the video. Part of the box fell downward, just missing Mike and Jeremy's heads. No one was injured.
This song is NOT an OLP song, but a song written by Sons Of Freedom, a band from Vancouver. OLP has performed this song in concert before.
"Out of Here" was a song that OLP recorded an independent music video for before they were signed to Sony Music (see 2.6). "Anacin" was renamed "Story of a 100 Aisles". "Spider Gun" was renamed "Disgusted", and then renamed again to "Shaking" for the release of Clumsy. "Home" and "Trapeze" were played during the band's short summer 96 tour with Alanis. Although these 2 songs were recorded during the making of Clumsy, they did not make it onto the album. It is possible that they will be released at a later time.
Sol Fox (an actor) is the individual on the cover to both Clumsy and Naveed. He was also in the video for "The Birdman". However, the song "The Birdman" was written about a man that Raine crossed paths with as a kid (read the timeline for more info).
Naveed was a schoolmate of Raine's. Nothing more is known about him except for what his name means (see 2.4).
