Nick didn't get the chance to say anything.Just as Brian closed the door
to his room,Donna burst in.Her eyes were wide and frightened,and her face
was pale.
"It's AJ!," the ran with her,as Nick shouted for a nurse. He was brought
down to AJ's ICU wing just as the others reached it. A massive number of
doctors filled his room.They could hear the sound of the flat-lining heart
monitor. Nick covered his tearful eyes with his hand as Denise McLean
was pulled from the room,screaming hysterically.
"We're losing him!," the doctor cried.
Howie and Brian stared at each other," No," Brian whispered. He dropped his
eyes to the floor,and felt his knees give out on him.Seconds later,Howie
and Kevin had helped him to a chair.
Two of the doctors rushed from the room,returning seconds later. Brian
felt like he was standing outside his body,watching the whole scene taking
place.Howie and Kevin were standing by the door with Lou.Nick was sitting
next to Brian,in what seemed to be a state of shock.Brian could hear
Denise in the back of his mind,calling out to her son.Donna was in the
room down the hall with her,trying to calm her down.
"Call it," Brian heard a doctor say.Like a bullet,he shot up out of his
chair and was standing in the room."No!," he cried.The doctors looked at
him,as he glanced at AJ's lifeless body.
"Please...keep trying," he begged."Brian,we have tried.We can't do anymore,"
the doctor said softly.
"No.You don't understand.We need him here.You have to keep trying," Brian
said.The doctor began to protest,as Brian's voice shook with emotion,"Think
of him as one of your own. He means the world to us-you can't just give up."
The doctors began their work again,as Brian walked from the room.Howie approached him,but he turned away.He walked over to the windows that looked down on the street. He dropped to his knees,with the sound of the flatlining monitor in his ears.He looked up at the sky,as his eyes filled with tears. Then he began to say a prayer for AJ.He said it out loud,over and over.He closed his eyes,and began to say the prayer again.He opened his eyes to find Kevin on his knees,beside him. Minutes later,they were dropped by Nick and Howie.The boys said the prayer together,as the doctors continued to work. The rooms around them grew silent,except for the sound of the monitor.
Nearly five minutes later,the doctors brought AJ back to life.
The four boys were allowed in AJ's room for a few minutes,and they gathered
around his bed wordlessly.
"This is some kind of miracle," Howie whispered.
"I thought he was going to die," Nick said,his eyes red and swollen. Brian
just shook his head in amazement.
"I told you,Nick.As long as we have faith,we're all going to make it through
this.We're not alone-we've got each other," as Brian looked up,he caught
Howie's eye and smiled.They all learned so much from each other.
The boys were being called from the room when Nick cried out.
AJ,who had come so close to dying minutes before,had opened his eyes.
