Kevin stared at the cold gray cement slab as she helped him to his feet. He felt as if his knees could give out on him at any moment.
"Why....," he whispered, turning to look at her.But he knew why he was there. He thought of his father the second he closed his eyes. How his dad had always been there for him, helping him up and guiding him through life. His dad had always been right beside him...until the day he took his last breath.
The flowers decorated the sides of the headstone as Kevin knelt down and let his fingers touch each letter of his father's name. Kevin's eyes followed. His dad was the reason he was part of the BSB.He'd inspired Kevin to leave Kentucky and go to Orlando in pursuit of his dreams. And now the inspiration was gone.
"Kevin...the inspiration your father gave to you is far from gone," she whispered, putting a hand on his shoulder,"He lives on....right here." she put her hand down to touch his heart,as his eyes filled with tears.
"I'm.....dead," he said slowly. He turned to look back at her as she
shook her head.
"No...but your family thinks that you are. And you have to make a choice,"
she said.
"A choice? But it's so simple...," he said. She smiled sadly and told him,
"If your choice had been simple, you wouldn't be here with me now. You
let yourself slip away from them....but not far enough that you can't go
back."
"What happens now?," he asked, running a hand through his hair.
"I walk you through your future....your present...your past..and then
you make the decision by what you see. And what your heart tells me,"
she said, looking up at the sky.
"And yes,I can hear your heart," she said,"That's how I knew you thought that your father is gone. His body might be....but he lives on in spirit."
"Where do we go now?," he asked. She shrugged,"Close your eyes...that will take us." As he closed his eyes, she took his hand in hers.
He opened his eyes. He saw an open field, and a group of boys. Off to the side stood two of the boys, one with a basketball in his hand. The older dark haired boy grabbed the little by the hand and they ran towards the basketball goal. Kevin smiled fondly,as she looked at him.
"It's me....and Brian.I remember being here," he said softly. She nodded, and watched the two boys. Suddenly, the younger one vanished."Wait...," but she took his hand as his mind began to wander....
They were in the hospital again...only this one was different from the other one. They were walking down a hall that was occupied by sick children. Kevin saw 5-year-old Brian lying in a hospital bed, sick and pale. His mom sat next to him, praying."I remember this too....," he said. Then suddenly, they were standing in front of a closed door.
"What happened?," he asked, turning to her."I don't know exactly....," then they turned. A hearse was pulling away from the small building as cars began to follow. It was the day of his father's funeral....
"I remember all of this....," he said, turning to her,"Can I see him?"
"Kevin...I wish I could tell you yes.But I just don't have those answers
yet...," she said quietly. He nodded.
"What will happen to my family now that I'm gone? And to the rest of the guys?," he asked. She looked out towards the cars as they drove away.
"I don't know.....but we can find out...."
Kevin takes a dive into his future...and the results shock him.Find out
in chapter three what happens to his family, and what remains of
