Internal Bleeding - Interview

This interview was conducted on March 20th with guitarist, Mr. Chris Pervelis, of Internal Bleeding. We'd also like to take this opportunity and publicly thank Chris for the interview.

How’d you come up with the name Internal Bleeding?
When I was a kid, I got hit in the side with a baseball bat and consequently suffered from Internal Bleeding. I was pissing blood for 2 weeks. I also thought that I wanted to create a band so heavy that it would cause Internal Bleeding. Lastly, I liked the song by Obituary with the same title. All those factors together is how I came up with the name.

Since what age have you been playing guitar?
I have been playing guitar since I graduated college in 1990. So, I’d say that I have been only playing for roughly 8 years or so.

Do you have any guitar idols or are here any guitarists you admire?
One of my soul inspirations is the mighty god Toni Iommi from Black Sabbath. The man created the heaviest sounds on earth! There are many guitarists I look up to such as Al Dimeola, John McGluaghlin, Wes Parker, Tal Farlow, Jimi Hendrix, Leslie West, and others.

Besides Death Metal, do you enjoy listening to other musical genres? What Metal bands (or non-Metal bands) do you chill out to?
Shit, I listen to tons of shit! I like a lot of oldies, Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, Johnny Maestro and the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. I also like early 80’s stuff; PIL, Echo and the Bunnymen, Bauhaus, etc. A lot of jazz, Al Dimeola, Charlie Parker, Spiro Gyra, etc and of course BLACK SABBATH (my all time favs!!). I don’t like country, today’s music (311, Pearl Jam, all that gay shit) and I don’t like new age shit like Janni.

What are your opinions/comments on Black Metal?
It would be cool if it was heavy and there was no makeup! There are a few B/M bands that I can listen to, but very few. Most of them are too treble filled, too screechy, and just plain boring. No offense, but I need my metal to be HEAVY, not atmospheric or cold, or evil, etc.

Has the transition between vocalists been easy on the band?
It’s been hard, but we are managing. With all the shit we’ve been through, it’s amazing that we are still around! I think that’s a testament to the dedication of the members of this band. I am very proud of that.

As we all know, Mr. Frank Rini left IB to follow a carrer in being a security guard. Now there is a rumour a float saying that he left so he can get married. Any truth to this or is it just another rumour?
Jesus Christ! Internal Bleeding generates a lot of rumours. Frank left because he moved to MD to be closer to his girlfriend, but thats not what him leave. He got a job as a corrections officer and it took time away from the band. When we recorded the LP, he was way out of practice and we told him that it had to stop, so he decided to leave. Frank is not getting married for many years still. I am still good pals with him. Bottom line, he’s gone-end of story.

Since the closing of the legendary Roxy Music Hall in Long Island, NY, has it been difficult to secure gigs on LI?
FUCK YES!!!

In your opinion, where and when did IB play their best show?
Our best show was in Amqui, Canada, in 1994. We sold out the joint, there were about 5,000 people there, we played in a sports arena with Cryptopsy. It was so fucking sick, we played our set twice!!

What’s the best/favorite band IB has toured with in the past?
We like to go on the road with Dying Fetus. We’ve played with them and traveled together numerous times, and its been great. I’d like to do more with them!

What’s the set list like right now?
It varies - usually we play selections from the first album as well as many tunes from the new album. We mix it up and its usually different at every show!

What’s your favorite song (original or cover) to play live?
I love to play "Occular Introspection"...that’s my favorite!

Has the band written any new material? If so, have you played any of it live?
Yeah, we have 2 new songs in the bag, both without lyrics. We played one live in Houston, TX a few weeks ago and it went over really well.

Any future recording plans?
As of yet no - but we are working on our next LP.

Any other comments you’d like to make?
