MY CONCERT REVIEW

Date: October 18, 1996 (7:00PM ~ 8:40PM)
Price: 5,500 yen (That's almost $50 USD, but it's a normal ticket price in Japan.)

I went to a Garbage concert held in a place called Club Quattro in Osaka, Japan. It's a small venue, but one of my favorites because of the intimacy. The crowd stands just a few feet away from the stage, and Japanese audiences have boundless energy and enthusiasm (but none of those crazy screaming girls show up to rock concerts). There is also a bar and bathrooms in the venue. We had to wait in line for about 30 minutes, but it was worth it! We got one free drink which was included with the ticket. The place was pretty small, but it was cool because we got to stand right in front of the stage. This being my first concert ever, I was EXCITED! A bit after seven o'clock, the lights dimmed and everyone became silent. We anxiously waited for several minutes and then the band members walked onstage. They started out with the song "Queer." I saw a list of the songs they were going to play which had 16 songs including one called "Supernatural" which isn't on any of their releases. The music was awesome and Shirley looked really sexy in a white Playgirl t-shirt! The crowd was jumping up and down for most of the show and a few people crowd-surfed, including myself, despite the security guards getting angry at the crowd-surfers. Shirley played guitar for a couple of songs, and talked to the audience a bit. At one point, she spoke mournfully about the passing of the Smashing Pumpkins' keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin. Garbage was on tour with them in the US at the time. Another thing that was unusual was when they had one of the crew members come onstage because it was his birthday. We started singing "Happy Birthday" to him and I was surprised that most of the Japanese people could sing it (they also knew the words to most of the Garbage songs). The guy wouldn't say anything to the crowd so Shirley started calling him a pussy and stuff. It was pretty cool. Overall, it was a great concert!
