prodigal webmaster v2.0

5/10/00

By now I'm sure you've seen the note on the front page. I just have no time to write all the reviews. Please, send me some copy and I'll put it on the site.

Meanwhile, here's my buddy Kent's index of pics from a party I just threw. Have fun.

Haven't even looked at my own site in six months. I was surprised to learn the other day that my guestbook works, last time I checked I was getting an error.

Anyway, hope everyone had a great New Year's, and updates are coming soon.

coffee is made how?

6/17/99

it's like three o clock in the morning. I'm trying to finish fixing my site that's been laying dormant for almost nine months now and i realize what a lousy father I've been...to the site I mean..I don't have any kids...

anyway, i've gotten the site so it's at least viewable. There's supposed to be an article in today's reader mentioning the site...go check it out if you haven't yet.

i have to come back to this desk in 6 hours... -z

Site Redesign

11/5/98

Wow, it's been a long time since I've talked to you guys. I apologize for that. i think you're going to like a lot of the new stuff here though...I really don't know what that's going to be quite yet, but I'm in the middle of it and it's pretty fun.

Promise it'll be done by the 15th.

ed. note...i haven't touched the site since then except to put an "under construction" splash screen up.

Jacor Ate My Radio

9/3/98

For those of you who have noticed something wrong with your alternative radio stations lately and actually were conscious enough to wonder what was going on, here's your answer...

92.5 is dead

Because of it's miniscule ratings (somewhere around 1.5, whatever that means), Luis, the president of the Binational Broadcasting Network, has leased the station to Jacor. Jacor is the station that has been swallowing up SD radio. They now own or lease 11 stations here. FCC regulations only allow 8, but because 3 of the stations are based in Mexico, they get away with it.

Screw them.

This is steadily turning into a rant, so if you want to hear the rest of it go here.

Tuba Man's: Update

8/20/98

This was sent to me today, just wanted to share it with the rest of you 'cause I love you so much.

Update on Tuba Man's. Being a North Park native and fan of San Diego bar history I too was sad to see it close. Good news! I ran into Chris who used to run Granny's and then bartended at Tuba's. Yesterday he told me that Jim, the official tuba man, just bought Homer's. They have been repainting and moving all the cool memorabilia. They will open quietly in a week and then open big in a month. Cheers.

Karaoke DJ Shot in Little Italy: Update

8/18/98

Lucky bastard. He's got an entry and an exit wound in his skull but somehow the bullet missed his brain.

This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs. This is a bullet that entered your skull but was afraid of your drug-scrambled mind so it got out as soon as possible.

Any questions?

Karaoke DJ Shot in Little Italy

7/27/98

I've been going to the Lamplighter for around 5 years now, right after they changed ownership and started up Karaoke. Joe Muscio was brought in right when I started hanging out there to tend the Karaoke Machine. I used to hang out quite a bit with Joe, playing darts in the Stabbin Cabin, late night trips to Viejas and Barona, giving him rides home after work and once to his son's basketball game.

Joey's sitting in UCSD medical clinic with a gunshot wound to the head. From what I've heard through a few different sources, he was hanging out at a friend's house with Shawn O'Conner, Shawn had a new gun that he was showing off, it was loaded, and it accidentally went off. Shawn was taken in and is out right now on $50,000 bail. The police suspect that it wasn't an accident.

Personally, knowing both Joey and Shawn and their relationship, I can't see how it could have been on purpose. Stupid shit happens with guns all the time, and unfortunately sometimes good people get the shit end of the barrel. So please, for the love of god, use the safety.

Good luck Joey. Hope to see you back in the Snakepit Lounge soon.

Tuba Man's Dead?

7/6/98

I drove by Tuba Man's the other day, glanced over and noticed that the name had been painted over. What's going on? Remodeling? Change of Ownership? Now that I've finally decided to go there the Dive Deities have deemed it unwise to let me go?

Okay, so I called the number in the phone book and NOBODY ANSWERED. Looks like another case of the man bringin' us down.

RIP Tuba Man's.

Apologies...

3/25/98

I have to apologize to everyone out there who has been waiting for an update. I know it's been a long time coming, but I'm actually employed now so I haven't had the time.

Yes, that's correct. For everyone out there who knows me personally you know how big of a shock it is not only to my family but to me. I won't bore you all with the facts of my new job but let's just say I'm in the internet industry and everything I learned from making this site (other than the cheapest cab fares) is now paying off.

So please bare (heh) with me. I've been to about 10 new bars that I'm aching to share with everyone, so just hold your horses. It will be worth it I swear.

Thoughts on 92.5

92.5 (formerly "The Flash") has been my favorite radio station for about the last two years. Sure, it's about the same music as 91X but I liked the DJ's much better. Recently Mike Halloran, former Dj and minor deity of 91X during their glory days, was hired on as Programming Director. This has, in my mind, had two effects.

(1) The music variety has gotten a hell of a lot better. Instead of just the same old crap, now they keep the same old crap down to a minimum and play a wide variety of other styles of music including Big Band, Lounge, and assorted James Brown. It's become the best mixture of a radio station and the jukebox at your favorite bar.

(2) The Dj's have gotten worse. With the increased time allotted for music, the DJ time has gone down giving them less room to be creative, funny, even interesting. Now with my favorite DJ (Bree) being taken off the overnight shift and my second favorite (Fitz) getting a new job in Vegas, I don't know what to do!!!

So now the music's better but I've lost faith in the Dj's. I guess they'll figure it out.

Wednesday Night Bowling!

My buddies and I have started bowling every Wednesday night at Sunset Bowl. 14 buck for as many people as you can fit in one lane from 9:30-12:00. They usually have drink specials as well ($1.50 Miller Lite last time, $1.00 Red Dog the week before that). So get a bunch of people together and take the skinheads bowling.

Oh, and if you happen to hear a bunch of rowdy people yelling at the top of their lungs, look for me. I'm probably in the mix somewhere.

Thursday

Last night a couple of buddies and I went bowling at Sunset Bowl, on Clairemont Drive. Red Dog Drafts were only a dollar. Man, I haven't been bowling in years but you put together five obnoxious guys, beer, and Bowling Animations on the scoring screen and you've got a good time.

These animations were the coolest. There was one, when you got a strike a big dragon flew up to the pins and fried them with his breath. Another strike animation was ten pins set up, and then this big foot squashes them.

Looking back on it I guess it doesn't seem that cool. But at the time...
