my recommended (downtown) vegetarian and other restaurants

anyone who's been in ny for awhile knows it's all about the food...

angelica kitchen
300 east 12 between 1 and 2
tasty, organic soups, salads, and sandwiches are available here in a cozy atmosphere (there's even a communal table). fair prices make this place a bargain, and so there is always a crowd but it's worth the wait!

caravan of dreams
405 east 6
the restaurant's decor has a definite charm, but unfortunately the food does not. the prices are inflated, and the food less than satisfying

the cottage
33 irving pl
a regular chinese restaurant that happens to have a separate vegetarian menu. it was only so-so, nothing really special. ok, i guess, if you don't mind refined flour a-plenty

dojo restaurant
14 west 4th -or-
24 saint marks pl
cheap - really cheap vegetarian food. perfect for students. nothing really outstanding, but doable. there's a slight asian influence on many of the dishes. good for a night of cheap eats and stiff drinks

emerald planet
2 great jones st
a large selection of wraps, all made with organic materials. they offer meat wraps, but all can be ordered vegetarian. fair prices for good-sized wraps, and a plethora of smoothies as well

eva's
11 west 8
very ordinary vegetarian and non vegetarian food, but also very cheap. they have super salads, sandwiches, pizza, protein plates, as well as a breakfast menu. many of the dishes are definitely NOT healthy

helianthus
48 macdougal st
my personal favorite vegetarian restaurant yet. serves up really tasty chinese or japanese vegetarian food. lots of "mock meats" that, while don't really resemble real meat, are tasty nonetheless. i have yet to taste anything bad from the kitchen. my personal favorites are the spinach dumplings and the lemon mock chicken. but watch out for the delivery guy. he's rude and obnoxious!

other foods
47 east 12
an organic cafe that has a limited dinner menu, but has a nice selection for breakfast and lunch. it isn't cheap, but the quality makes it worth it. the sandwiches all sound tempting, and the homemade veggie burger was excellent and filling

petit dejeuner
6th ave and west 4
a small little shop that specializes in sandwiches and smoothies, and also carries a large variety of muffins and desserts. they have a separate board for vegetarian sandwiches, and while the quality isn't the same as pamela's (see below), they are tasty none the less, and there's more variety

quantum leap
88 west 3
they have a nicely varied menu including mexican and japanese dishes, as well as a nice brunch menu, for low prices. but the teriyaki tofu i tried failed to impress. very ordinary taste - i'd rather go to yaffa or dojo

sacred chow
522 hudson st
another one of my favorites. they have a nice selection of tofu, seitan, and tempeh dishes that they sell by the piece or by the pound. they also have muffins, cookies, etc, some of which are wheat-free. a tiny little shop with a couple tables with the same homey feeling as magnolia bakery

souen
28 east 13
i'd heard varied reviews of this place, so i went in kind of warily. this is macrobiotic cuisine, and while i didn't find anything too tempting on the main menu, they had an ample specials list. the poor reviews were, perhaps, due to people unaccustomed to vegetarian food and experienced culture shock, because i was satisfied

temple in the village
74 west 3
buffet-style, and they have signs that tell you if the dish is macrobiotic, oil-free, etc. many dishes were korean, and i found it very blah

vegetarian dim sum house
24 pell st
they have a nice selection of dim sum, but nothing was really spectacular. you'd have to guess what many things are on the menu, because there are no explanations. anyone know what's in a treasure ball?

vegetarian paradise 2
77 west 4
i don't really find this place to be anything too special, but they have a large selection of dim sum and every other kind of dish you could imagine. the beef i've tried really does taste like and resemble the real thing

village natural
46 greenwich ave
i wasn't impressed at all by the food here. the teriyaki sauce was tongue-curdling, and they had what may be the worst vegetable dumplings i've ever had

viva herbal pizza
179 2nd ave between 11 and 12
a huge selection of healthy dishes, pizza being the obvious. the pizzas come with all kinds of good toppings, and you can even create your own. awesome

whole earth bakery and kitchen
130 st marks pl (and avenue a)
one of my favorite places - lots of vegan choices here, including combinations of wheat/oil/sugar free. but it all tastes so good, you forget you're not eating the non-vegan version. i could eat the whole tray of chocolate chews. as for the food, the tofu pizza is especially good

yaffa cafe
97 st marks pl
the ambience is what's really cool about this place, as well as the fact that it's open 24 hours. everything that i've tried has been pretty decent. it's good for the late night munchies

zen palate
34 east union sq (and other loactions)
this place is really popular, and i'm not really sure why. everything that i've tried has seemed pretty ordinary. they have a decent-sized menu for low prices. the best thing i've had are the basil moo-shu rolls

my non-vegetarian choices

cafe lalo
201 west 83
way on the upper west side, but it's a nice place to go after a movie or show to have some really good dessert and coffee. their sandwiches are also really good. pricey, but worth the occasional splurge. the weekend brunches sound really good, but i haven't been able to make it up there (scenes from "you've got mail" were filmed in here)

city bakery
22 east 17 between broadway and 5th
fresh, gourmet sandwiches, soups, and salads. on the pricey side, but totally worth it. their hot chocolate is really rich and worth checking out, especially with the homemade marshmallow!

cookies and couscous
230 thompson st
this is a tiny, mom and pop moroccan restaurant. the food is excellent, the service friendly but very slow. they have cookies, but i'd go for the homemade sorbet

garden of eden
162 west 23 -or-
14th street between university and 5th
i think this is a better place to go for gourmet shopping than dean and deluca... they have a huge selection of exotic fruits and ready made foods. the deli will make any type of sandwich you ask for

healthy pleasures
93 university pl -or-
93 broome st
a small market with a large vegetarian (and non as well) selection of ready made foods or ingredients. i've found that their ready made sandwiches are the best bet, although their hot and cold salad bar is always popular

it's a wrap
357 6th ave btn 4th and washington
the best place for wraps in the city, in my opinion. quality wraps and smoothies, with lowfat options. the best that i've tasted, although pricey for the size of the wraps, but they're bursting with flavor

japonica
100 university pl
a hugely popular japanese restaurant with some of the best maki rolls around. prices are inflated, and there's always a wait during peak hours

le figaro cafe
184 bleeker st
i don't know why i like this cafe so much - it's one of four on each corner of the streets. they have good coffee and lots of desserts, but i guess it's the ambience and the fact that the waiters will let you order one cup of coffee, and then leave you alone for an hour as you chat with a friend (actually, i think they expect it!) they serve food too, but it's very ordinary

magnolia bakery
bleeker and west 11
a tiny little bakery that looks like it belongs in a small midwest town, or something. it's totally cute and quaint, and they have a rocking selection of desserts. unlike any other nyc bakery

michael and zoe
2nd avenue and 6th
another small shop, but with a nice selection of healthy sandwiches and coffee. their cafe mocha is excellent

pamela's cafe
683 broadway
really good sandwiches (they come on fresh baguettes, about a foot long) as well as other things like dessert and coffee. for vegos, the veggie pate sandwich is really yummy. they also have a bakery around the corner that has the best chocolate cheese (half chocolate, half cheescake) muffins!

serendipity 3
225 east 60th
so this isn't really downtown... but to me, it's worth the trip uptown. they're expensive, but worth the occasional splurge. they have creative sandwiches and awesome, one of a kind desserts. be forewarned that all of the portions are huge! the frozen hot chocolate is my choice for dessert. it's sooo good

stingy lulu's
129 st marks
an awesome, late night diner that serves some eclectic food. how many places do you see seafood lasagna? that actually tastes really good? dim lighting, dance music, and scantily clad waitresses all add to the ambience. a good place to hang out for very reasonably (in nyc) priced drinks

tsunami
70 west 3rd
very fresh sushi at a reasonable price. and they're creative, too. my favorite place, due to the quality and the price

union square green market
union square, monday, wednesday, friday, saturday
fresh fruit, vegetables, and baked goods galore for a bargain! a sample of the goods found here are: cheese, milk, ice cream, fish, breads...

zutto
62 greenwich ave -or-
77 hudson st
huge, huge, huge menu with lots of original dishes. the maki rolls were excellent; i think it's worth it to go once in awhile. they even have a jfk jr. section, which shows exactly what he ordered every time he went there

back to the emporium
