Part 3

Back at the cottage, Melissa and Howie had decided to watch Titanic, Melissa’s favourite movie. Melissa comes out of the kitchen with their popcorn and discovers that Howie isn’t there.

Melissa: Howie? Where did you go?

Just then Howie comes in from outside.

Melissa: What were you doing outside?

Howie: Getting you this.

He holds out a red rose.

Howie: Seeing how we’re watching Titanic, I thought it was appropriate. I mean the main character’s name is Rose.

Melissa: Howie that’s so sweet!

She takes the rose from him.

Howie: It was either that or a chunk of ice.

Melissa: I think I prefer the rose. The ice would have melted all over the floor.

They both laugh.

Melissa: It’s too bad Lissa and Nick aren’t still here. This would have helped convince them that there was something going on between us.

Howie: I can’t believe they fell for that. They didn’t realize that it was all a setup to get them alone together.

Melissa: I know. They really believed us.

What neither one of them realized though was that the reason Nick and Lissa fell for their trick was because they both knew something that Melissa and Howie didn’t, which was that Melissa and Howie really did like each other. Unfortunately, they both thought that the other was only pretending in order to help get Nick and Lissa together.

Howie: Well why don’t we start the movie?

Melissa: Okay.

She sets the popcorn and her rose down on the table and sits down on the couch. Howie starts the movie and then sits at the opposite end of the couch. For over an hour, they sit in silence. Suddenly Melissa is hit with a piece of popcorn. She turns to look at Howie who is pretending to be interested in the movie. But Melissa isn’t fooled. She throws one back at him.

Howie: Hey!

Melissa: You started it!

Howie: I was just trying to get your attention. You were getting too into the movie. Haven’t you already seen it like 10 times?

Melissa: Just about. So?

Howie: So there are other things you could be focusing on.

Melissa: Like what? You? Are you feeling neglected?

Howie: Maybe.

Melissa: I’m sorry. I’ll fix that.

She picks up her bowl of popcorn and starts throwing handfuls at him so Howie does the same thing with his. With each throw, Melissa crawls a little bit closer to Howie on the couch until she is practically sitting on his lap.

Melissa: Do you feel better now?

Howie: Not quite.

He reaches up and pulls her mouth down to his. Afterwards they exchange a look of understanding.

Howie: When we told Nick and Lissa we wanted to be alone together, you really meant it.

Melissa: Yes. And so did you.

Howie: With all of my heart.

They smile at each other and Howie pulls Melissa down to lay on him as they turn their attention back to the movie. It just happens to be at Melissa’s favourite part.

Melissa: I love this part! It is just so adorable!

Howie: Really? Then I’ll just have to do something about that.

He rolls them over so they are in the right position.

Howie: How’s this?

Melissa: Perfect.

Melissa kisses Howie on the forehead and that is how they stay for the rest of the movie.
