Part 6

Back in the nightclub, A.J. is still watching the same girl on the dance floor. He’s trying to play it cool, but he can’t keep his eyes off her. Finally he can’t take it anymore and gets out of his chair and heads toward her. She is just turning to leave the dance floor when he reaches her. He doesn’t say a word, he just grabs her hand and pulls her into his arms, just as the deejay puts on a slow song. She is about to protest at this stranger’s rudeness, until she looks into his eyes. What she sees there changes her mind and she wraps her arms around him instead. They both close their eyes and move together to the music in silence.

**********

Howie and Melissa quietly descend the stairs that will take them back to the nightclub.

Melissa: What if someone’s watching the stairs? They’re going to know what we’ve been doing!

Howie: No they won’t. Stop worrying so much. And no one’s going to be watching the stairs, probably not even your security. You know you really need to do something about that. I had no problems getting upstairs at all. Next time it might not be someone so friendly.

Melissa: I don’t think it’s possible for them to be friendlier than you were! But you don’t need to worry because we have very good security. I told them you were coming so they knew who you were and that you wouldn’t hurt me.

Howie: No I wouldn’t.

They reach the bottom of the stairs and Howie peeks around the corner.

Melissa: Well?

Howie: No one, just like I said. Let’s go.

Melissa doesn’t move and Howie turns around to look at her.

Howie: Now what?

Melissa: Are you sure I look okay?

Howie: You look great.

He kisses her quickly and then grabs her hand.

Howie: Come on.

They make their way across the floor to the table where Howie left A.J. But A.J.’s not there.

Howie: Where’s A.J.?

Melissa: Who?

Howie: A.J., my best friend. Didn’t I tell you? He came here with me. But he seems to have disappeared.

Melissa: But where would he go? He doesn’t know anyone here right?

Howie: He does now.

Melissa: What?

Howie: Look over there.

He points at the dance floor.

Howie: See that guy with the blue hair. That’s A.J.

Melissa: What a coincidence! That’s my friend Andrea that he’s dancing with. Is A.J. seeing anyone right now?

Howie: Not that I know of.

Melissa: Good because Andrea’s not either and I think they look cute together.

Howie: It looks like they’re getting along pretty good too.

Back on the dance floor, the song has ended. Andrea and A.J. are staring at each other, but neither one knows what to say. After a long, awkward silence, they just turn and walk away.

Howie: Of course I could be wrong. What just happened?

Melissa: I don’t know, but I’m going to find out. Don’t let A.J. go anywhere.

Melissa runs after Andrea and catches her near the exit.

Melissa: Where are you going?

Andrea: Home.

Melissa: Why?

Andrea: Why not? I was done my shift hours ago.

Melissa: You didn’t act like you wanted to leave a few minutes ago. I saw you dancing with that hot guy.

Andrea: Yeah well he didn’t introduce himself or even talk to me so he’s obviously not interested in me.

Melissa: Don’t be so sure. Look over there.

She points to where Howie and A.J. are sitting. A.J. is talking to Howie but watching Andrea.

Melissa: He looks pretty interested to me. Why don’t you go over there and say hi?

Andrea: I don’t know...

Melissa: I’ll tell you what. If you go talk to him, I’ll go ask his friend to dance.

Andrea: Yeah right. You’d never do that.

Melissa: I will, I promise. So, do we have a deal?

Andrea: I guess so.

Melissa grabs her arm and pulls her in A.J.’s direction before she can change her mind. When they reach the table, Melissa catches Howie’s eye and signals him to play along.

Melissa: Hi.

Howie: Hi yourself.

Melissa: I’m Melissa, and this is my friend Andrea.

Howie: I’m Howie, and this is my friend A.J.

Melissa: Do you mind if we join you?

Howie: No. Please do.

He pulls out the chair beside him for her and A.J. does the same for Andrea.

Andrea: Thank you.

A.J.: It was my pleasure.

A waitress comes by and they all order drinks. When she leaves, Melissa looks at Howie.

Melissa: So Howie, how come you’re not out there dancing?

Howie: I don’t have anyone to dance with.

Melissa: That’s not true. I’m sure any girl you asked would love to dance with you.

Howie: But I don’t want just any girl.

Melissa: I think you’re just making excuses to avoid going out there. Do you even like to dance?

Howie: Yes.

Melissa: What about this song? Do you enjoy dancing to slow songs like this one, or just fast ones?

Howie: Is that an invitation?

Melissa: Maybe.

Howie: I like dancing to slow songs, but I’d like it even more if it was with you.

Melissa: In that case, would you like to dance?

Howie: I thought you’d never ask.

They get up out of their seats and Melissa gives Andrea a look and motions to A.J. before leaving the two of them alone.

Andrea: What just happened?

A.J.: What do you mean?

Andrea: Melissa was totally flirting with Howie. In all the time I’ve known her, she’s never done that. She’s usually too shy to even talk to guys.

A.J.: Maybe it’s just me, but I think it’s easier when the guy’s already your boyfriend.

Andrea: Boyfriend? They’re dating?

A.J.: Among other things.

Andrea: She set me up!

A.J.: How?

Andrea: She promised that if I came over here and talked to you, she’d ask your friend to dance. Seeing how she was willing to embarrass herself for me, I thought the least I could do was cooperate.

A.J.: Why didn’t you want to talk to me?

Andrea: I did, I just...

A.J.: What is it? I’d like to know, please.

Andrea: Okay this is embarrassing, but when I looked at you I couldn’t talk I was so...

A.J.: Surprised by my hair?

Andrea: No.

A.J.: Repulsed by my face?

Andrea: Of course not.

A.J.: Hypnotized by my good looks?

Andrea: Okay now you’re making fun of me.

A.J.: Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I know what it was. You were so overwhelmed at our instant attraction that you were speechless.

Andrea: Yes. How did you know?

A.J.: Because I felt the same way.

Andrea blushes and A.J. reaches across the table to hold her hand.

A.J.: I’m really glad Melissa tricked you into coming over here.

Andrea: Me too.
