Chapter 2-Part II_________The Greatest Law

Taking a careful look at our news headlines, it would seem that mankind has a few problems getting along with one another. More and more as time marches forward, our society is becoming increasingly hardened against civil moral statutes. The love of many is beginning to wax cold. It would seem that while the Human race is busy trying to create a world in which everyone has common interests, the earth itself has been busy rebelling against the human race. Never in history has there been such catastrophic disaster on a worldwide scale as in this century. It is evident that everything is winding up for some sort of climax. More biblical prophecies are being fulfilled concerning the end of the age than at any other time in history. The two basic questions come to mind: What does it all mean, and where did we go wrong? There are really no easy answers to these questions and the solutions seem to be even more elusive. Jesus gives us some clues to these perplexing issues as He attempts to sway our focus from the weighty, earthly issues and zeroes in on the heavenly future, the spiritual conditions, and the issues of the heart. "Blessed are the poor in spirit! For theirs is the kingdom of the Heavens." "Blessed are they who mourn! For they shall be comforted." "Blessed are the meek! For they shall inherit the earth." "Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness! For they shall be filled." "Blessed are the merciful! For they shall obtain mercy." "Blessed are the pure in heart! For they shall see God." "Blessed are the peacemakers! For they shall be called sons (or children) of God." "Blessed are they who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake! For theirs is the kingdom of Heaven." "Blessed are you when they shall reproach you, and persecute you, and shall say every evil word against you, lying, on account of Me. Rejoice and leap for joy, for your reward is great in Heaven; for in this way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt becomes tasteless with what shall it be salted? For it has strength for nothing any more, but to be thrown out, and to be trampled under by men (mankind)." "You are the light of the world, a city situated on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a grain measure, but on the lampstand; and it shines for all who are in the house. So let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father in Heaven." "Do not think that I came to annul the law or the prophets; I did not come to annul, but to fulfill. Truly I say to you, until the heavens and the earth pass away, in no way shall one iota or one tittle (pronunciation marks) pass away from the law until all comes to pass. Whoever then shall break one of these commandments, the least, and shall teach men so, he (or she) shall be called least in the kingdom of the Heavens. But whoever does and teaches them, this one shall be called great in the kingdom of the Heavens (thus the purpose for this book!). For I say to you, if your righteousness shall not exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, in no way shall you go into the kingdom of the Heavens."
