Studio Notes & Comments: The first song written by Gary after getting the new Ibanez RGR570 guitar and something of a surprise number for us! This was the first song I ever wrote in which the bass-line came first (as I almost always work out all the guitar parts first and think about what the bass should do afterwards.......I also do the same with the bass parts for many of Jimmy's songs). It was a strange evolution for this song. When I had the bass part done, I was hearing Metallica in my head for the guitars, but that was certainly nothow it turned out! When I plugged my new Ibanez into the studio, I discovered that it sounded so fantastic "clean" that my perception of how the song would sound somehow metamorphosed. It starts out with two stereo-split guitars and the bass all playing a series of natural harmonics on the introduction and then goes into what can only be described as a jazz/funk fusion type of groove! One of the rhythm guitars is played "clean", while the other is aided by a wah pedal and the overall effect is something of a funk-monster. The basic chord-structure theme then evolves into a much heavier treatment towards the end, more akin to a jazz/rock fusion approach and probably influenced by the fact that I'd been listening to Joe Satriani's new album quite a lot! Jimmy came up with some nice lyrics along the theme of the pressures of the rat race and all-in-all, we were quietly pleased with this one.
