CD REVIEW: ANDY SUMMERS - SYNAESTHESIA [1995 CMP RECORDS]

1996 - N2K Inc.

by Hilarie Grey

Years after the breakup of The Police, Andy Summers remains one of the most eclectic and daring guitarists around, as expressive in his instrumental music as in any pop tome. In another radical departure from what's expected (his last effort was an acoustic duo romp with John Etheridge), his Synaesthesia (CMP CMP CD 1011; 43:03) is a mischievous and sometimes abrasive mind-trip packed with influences ranging from classic Monk to industrial rock to punk. His songs hit with visceral beams--the dense grunge Latin of "Cubano Rebop" marches with a tribal intensity, for example, while maintaining oddly melodic curves. Summers' illustrative skills play out on tracks like the mythic "Low Flying Doves," with cascading guitar chords and crying lead lines against a steady-beating wall of percussion, and the jaunty "Umbrellas Over Java," propelled by a glib double-hit acoustic bass line. Summers has a knack for sending "regular" song structures askew--the ragged Batman-on-speed "Monk Hangs Ten" is the most devilish example here. With Andy Summers at the helm, you can expect the unexpected, and you'll still be surprised.
