I've been lucky enough to meet both Sting and Andy before, once each.
I met Andy at the Chance in Poughkeepsie, sight of the famous Police show in 78. It was his XYZ tour. A friend at the local radio station got me backstage. The chance is a small venue, and I was front row, but I was still a little surprised when I went back stage and he said, "You're the one that was singing all the words to my songs!" "yup."
As a young 15 or 16 year old, I also asked him any recommendations he could give to aspiring rock stars. "Don't smoke too much pot." was his reply. A real nice guy, Andy was. I met sting a year or two later. The venue was the Ritz in NYC, a small club where Sting often plays before he starts a large tour. Unfortunately, the original Ritz closed down about 2 years ago.
In any case, I had a friend who knew Steve Coleman, who was filling in for Branford on the tour. I made it to the bands dressing room, and asked if there was anyway I could get to Sting's dressing room, on the other side of the stage, and heavily guarded. Kenny Kirkland said "Try walking on the stage behind the curtain, to the back door of the dressing room." OK. We had nothing to lose.
We made it in, and was standing 3 feet from Sting, who was talking to Downtown Julie Brown at the time. Suddenly a bouncer type said "What are you doing here?"
"Uh, we're with the band."
"What band?"
"We're friends with Steve Coleman"
"Hey Delmar (Brown), are these guys OK?"
"Yeah, sure."
We were in! Ten seconds later I was talking to Sting. I can't remember very much of the conversation. I was just psyched to be talking with him. That was my senior year of high school, and still one ofthe high points of my life so far.
Oh yeah, he made me a screwdriver, too. I didn't find him arrogant at all. He was cordial and very friendly.
