Rosengarten - Mannheim, Germany

by Thomas Loy on January 18, 1997

Business as usual...

The evening was opened by Soraya and band. They played some songs. They were not bad, but the audience seemed to be a little bored, no-ne was dancing, only some people clapped their hands...

  1. The Hounds Of Winter
  2. I Hung My Head
  3. I Was Brought To My Senses
  4. Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot
  5. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free
  6. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
  7. Seven Days
  8. Mad About You
  9. You Still Touch Me (acoustic)
  10. Fields Of Gold
  11. I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying
  12. Synchronicity II
  13. Roxanne
  14. Bring On The Night / When The World Is Running Down...
  15. Demolition Man
  16. Englishman In New York
  17. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
  18. Every Breath You Take
  19. Lithium Sunset
  20. Fragile

Some notes:

1.) The lucky ones from this evening were an american girl called "Rebecca" and a boy called "Richard" from Frankfurt. Sting asked if there are people speaking english and only a dozen people wanted to go on stage. Rebecca was the one and she had to translate some sentences from Sting into german, but she needed some time to think about. So Sting joked, that her german is not much better than his own. They made a good performance. Rebecca obviously enjoyed being on stage and singing with Sting, she danced and shook her body in this affected way, backing-singers usually do.

2.) "Bring On The Night/When The World..." was very enlarged than in spring/summer '96 and on the boots and tapes I heard from US. Two or three times they decreased the speed and drive, tinkled on their instruments and got back to the usual speed and drive.

3.) "You Still Touch Me" was played as the "acoustic version". They were all standing in a row in front of the stage. Sting invited Vinnie first to come to him. Sting seemed to be very friendly to Vinnie this evening. He touched him on his shoulder and on his back two or three times, gave him some smiles - much more than all other musicians. Vinnie looked much older and much smaller to me than I remember him from last gigs and from the photos I've seen the last months.

4.) The canvasses in the back of the stage were not used for projecting some photos as I know it from concerts in spring/summer last year. Only some lights and turning circles were shown.

5.) All musicians made their usual job. Kenny smiled, yawned and smoked alternately, Dominic mostly without making a face, Butch and Clark made their usual jokes and moves. Only on "Englishman in New York" there was something different. Butch and Dominic were singing on the mic and suddenly they laughed and laughed. They turned around sometimes but always they were coming back to sing they were laughing once more. I wondered why...

6.) One word about the audience. I'd never seen such a bored and lame audience like this evening. Okay, they were waving and clapping their hands, dancing... But there was not this exiting feeling in this audience I had and I felt on every other time. Only some people screamed for an encore, no singing when they were off-stage, not a little bit excitement about the rap-part in "EINY"...

7.) The drum technician was on stage for five or six times. He stayed very long time behind Vinnie and his drums (at one time much longer than one whole song). But it wasn't recognizable to me for what reason.

8.) And a note, what happened after the show: After the show we spent sometime in the wardrobe waiting for our jackets, talking about the concert, drinking a beer... Sometime we decided to go to our car we'd parked some streets away. On our way we came purely by chance to the stage-exit. We thought Sting and his musicians had gone to their hotel long time ago... But a dozen people (also Richard and Rebecca) were standing before the door and three black limousines (Mercedes-Benz; for german people looking in other towns, the cars had registration signs of Boeblingen: BB) were standing also there. We thought it would be useful to wait some minutes...(not so purely by chance I got a pencil and some paper in my jacket). After waiting 3 minutes a little hectic came up behind the door and suddenly there was Sting. When he saw the boys and girls standing before the door he took some steps back and looked very bored and disappointed. Maybe he had expected to get away without having to give some autographs. But he walked out, took a pencil and gave some without saying a word. Six or seven autographs later he got into one car, that drove off fast. Some guys were very frustrated, because they got no autograph and demolished some dust-bins standing next to the door, a girl started crying... Most of people went away now, but there were standing the other two limousines... We decided to wait with four other boys some minutes again. And after five minutes the band members came out. Dominic first. He walked directly in front of me. I asked him for an autograph, he hesitated, looked at me and signed after a view moments. Butch and Clark went out without being asked. Then came Kenny. He stopped, waited until a boy took up my pencil, that was fallen to the ground, and took long time to gave all autographs correctly. Vinnie went out very fast and got directly in the car. A boy near me screamed: "Vinnie, I'm a drummer too, I'm a very big fan of you." After that he came back and gave some autographs too. I asked him two or three times, what's about his next solo album, but the only words he said, were "Thanks, Thanks." Then all were in the cars. I went to the second car that was waiting for driving away. Clark was sitting on the seat in the back and looked at me. I showed him, that I want to have an autograph of him and he pulled the window down and gave it to me. After that I wanted to go to the other car to get one of Butch too, but the cars drove off. Now we took our car home, just before the streets became to an ice-skating rink because of an ice-rain. Hope the trucks got through luckily for the next concert in Bielefeld...

Hope to meet someone in Frankfurt or Freiburg.
