Frankenhalle - Nuremberg, Germany

by Reimar Hünefeld on February 17, 2000

It was my first Sting concert, and I absolutely enjoyed it! There was no supporting act; Sting started playing at a quarter past eight, and he played for a little over two hours. It was sold out, I guess that there were about 8000 fans there. Every song had a different stage background (e.g. a moon for "Moon over Bourbon Street" or stars for "Fragile"). The band was excellent - my friend, who is a keyboarder, couldn't believe the pianist's outstanding skills!! Manu Katche (drums) was brilliant as ever (he also did the French rap on "Perfect Love gone wrong"), and Dominic Miller (guitar), the trumpet player, the second keyboard player and the two background vocalists (one male, one female) did not disappoint either.

The set list was as follows (I might have made a couple of mistakes with the order, but that's how I remember it):

  1. A thousand years
  2. If you love somebody set them free
  3. After the rain has fallen
  4. We'll be together
  5. Perfect love gone wrong
  6. All this time
  7. Mad about you
  8. Fill her up
  9. Fields of gold
  10. Moon over Bourbon Street
  11. Seven days
  12. Englishman in New York
  13. Every little thing she does is magic
  14. Roxanne
  15. Tomorrow we'll see
  16. Brand new day
  17. Desert rose
  18. When the world is running down you make the best of what's still around

Encore 1

  1. If I ever lose my faith in you
  2. Every breath you take

Encore 2

  1. Message in a bottle
  2. Fragile

During "Message in a Bottle" (which Sting performed solo, accompanying himself with an acoustic guitar), a female fan in the audience screamed " I love you". Sting answered "Ich liebe dich" - his German seemed not to be too bad either!

After reading all those rewievs, now it is my turn to pay something back.

The Frankenhalle in Nuernberg itself is the exact opposite to all those theatres he played in the States. It's just an ugly cube in a complex of several exhibition halls, no possibilily to get seated (who wants a seat during a Rock concert??) and a balcony offering a possibility to stand and take a look over the crowd.

The concert itself started at 8:15 pm due to snowfall. before the concert they played several Beatles songs over the PA (Come Together and 2 or 3 others) several minutes before the concert a roadie carried a little sender around the stage and checked whether 3 light spots at the back followed him, I never noticed that before. They just put a sender in Stings, Dominics and Chris's pocket and switch on the sender of the person they want the spots to be focused on.

BTW for those who care: Chris Botti has his hair cut.

The setlist of the concert was just like those already posted before, the sound was EXCELLENT, so anyone with decent equipment should have made a great audience recording -if you have made one...call me, please... Sings voice sounded great, I just read in the newspaper that he had to cancel several gigs because of voice problems, well, yesterday evening he was there!!! and I had no impression that he tried to save his voice for other gigs. the only thing he didn't do was the Armstrong-voice during MOBS, I think that has been to hard for him to do every night.

The first hour of the concert was great, the songs fitted together perfectly. As I am a drummer I took a special look at Manu. He is locked in the click-track but he now gives more and more of his tom-tom-percussion and splash-cymbal-work. the whole band is very tight, a big development to the first live recordings where they all sounded a bit shy.

The last 4 or 5 tracks lacked of this excellent quality. BND and desert Rose didn't really start off and the new version of Roxanne (with this quiet intro that remains me of the 1981 Amnesty solo performance) doesn't really kick. But that's my opinion.

During MIAB a girl screamed "I love you" , Sting thought for a moment and replied in German "Ich liebe Dich"

Overall it was a great conert, I'm looking forward to April 1st to see him again in London!

To those who are witing for the tour programs. I have purchased enough to cover you all, the guy at the merchandising stand called me "customer of the day".
