Stadthalle - Bremen, Germany

by Joerg Dreckmann on February 21, 2000

There was no supporting act. Sting started playing at a quarter past eight, and he played for two hours. It was sold out, there were about 8000 fans. The audience was very lame during the first few songs, but when Every Little Thing.. started the audience woke up and they began clapping their hands and singing. Musically Sting's concert was nothing special. "Business as usual". When he started "Bring On The Night" I hoped he would not play only the intro, but he did and continued with "When the world is running down" which was the last song of the regular set.

The set list was as follows :

  1. A thousand years
  2. If you love somebody set them free
  3. After the rain has fallen
  4. We'll be together
  5. Perfect love... gone wrong
  6. All this time
  7. Mad about you
  8. Seven days
  9. Fill her up
  10. Fields of gold
  11. Every little thing she does is magic
  12. Moon over bourbon street
  13. Tomorrow we'll wee
  14. Englishman in New York
  15. Brand new day
  16. Roxanne
  17. Desert Rose
  18. Bring on the night (Intro)
  19. When the world is running down

Encore 1

  1. If I ever lose my faith in you
  2. Every breath you take

Encore 2

  1. Message in a bottle (acoustic version)
  2. Fragile

It was a nice evening, but there was no surprise and the setlist was the same like in all the other shows before.

A short review of the concert yesterday in Bremen!

Sting started at 8:15 and was in great mood with a great voice! But this time Jason Rebello had all the views on him because he was wearing a black long hair wig and black sun-glasses, looking like the young Prince, very cool! Sting and the whole band had a lot of smiles for him.

Setlist was the same but Sting surprised us with two lines of Mack the knife in German in the beginning of MOBS (GREAT!!!), after that he gives us a very cool and diverse version of MOBS ( with his Armstrong-voice etc..)!!!

I think his voice is back, completely and yesterday he showed us what he can! Many songs had small variations ( maybe recognized only by the crazy people doing a few concerts more !?) but the audience was very euphoric!

Best songs ( very subjective!) Tomorrow we'll se ( wonderful end)! All this time ( with a very sweet singing melody in the beginning) and Desert rose ( very powerful voice, for me the best version, I've seen on stage, yet ...without Cheb Mami!!! )

.....back to Jason Rebello who had a lot fun with his hair on that evening, playing the flashy rockstar! During his BOTN solo he threw his wig away and everybody was laughing again!

Again a wonderful and funny concert was over!

Hi folks, the concert on Sunday was really a joyful one.

Sting was in a good mood and made some jokes throughout the set.

During the encore somebody threw a box with "Hustenbonbons" (cough sweets?) on the stage and Sting said (as in Bielefeld) "Oh, Hustenbonbons" with a quite low voice. Then he took two sweets and pretended to die immediately...

The set list was the same as ever except for a short version of "Mackie Messer" which he added just before "Moon over Bourbon Street".

For me the two personal highlights were: - "Roxanne": Yes, normally I prefer the songs from the new album to listening to the old songs over and over again but this time Sting changed this old favourite once again.

Not only the slow, amnesty 1981-like beginning of the song (which we already knew from the Bielefeld concert) but here in Bremen he added a new and very fast bassline that made the song very danceable and reggae-like. I never, never heard this bassline before...

The second highlight was Jason Rebello who came on stage dressed as the absolute pop star: long black leather coat, dark black sunglasses and a haircut which looked like he had watched too many '80s synthie pop band videos (e.g. Duran Duran or Howard Jones in his heyday).

In other words: Very cool and very ridiculous...

OK, having seen Jason 3 weeks before I wondered "What the hell has he done with his hair?"

The solution was presented throughout his solo during "When the world is running down...": He lifted his wig(!) and threw it away!!!

That was really one of the funniest moments in a Sting concert I ever experienced..

.

When leaving the venue every guest was offered a red rose for free - nice gesture!

Far more interesting was the soundcheck (at least I could listen to the last 30 minutes standing outside of the hall).

At first Sting did "Come down in time" so I assume he has sung this song in Los Angeles when he presented the MusiCares Person Of The Year award to Elton John (anybody any info?). Anyway, one of my favourite cover tunes Sting ever did!

Then rehearsals for "Fill her up", "Mackie Messer"(!) and several attempts of "When the world is running down...".

I'm not sure if Sting left the stage at this moment but then a nice version of "Walk this way" came to my ears (yes, this Run DMC / Aerosmith thing...) -> great job by Dominic!

Last song featured was "Big lie, small world" but only a very rough and silent version (almost only the vocals).

So, again some new experiences although this was my 5th concert...
