Here is the set-list for last nights show (Feb 25th) at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA - Vinx opened. I was a little disappointed to see that Sting hadn't changed his set-list since his first leg of the TST tour - he played the same set-list in Charolette, N.C. last May - except for the Demolition Man break in King of Pain. I was hoping to hear Mesage in a Bottle - I thought it was one of his favorite songs - anyone know why it has been dropped from most of his current tour??
Finally -- after the show on our way home my friends and I followed 2 vans leaving the show all the way to Dulles airport. Could never tell if Sting was on board. The vans drove through a private gate and disappeared. We spotted them again parked next to a medium size jet - we missed the people boarding it. Does anyone know if Sting flew to N.Y. after the show? Does he own his own jet?
I was at the show and I remember Sting going into Consider me Gone during Roxanne. He also did Staight To My Heart during another song, but I can't remember which one it was. I think maybe during Saint Augustine In Hell.
ANYWAY ... AS I WAS SAYING before my computer became possessed by aliens, I unfortunately have only had one opportunity to see Sting perform live and in person. I went to the Fairfax show last weekend (the one with the much-maligned play list). I thought it was great. I thought Sting was great. I thought the music was great. Of course, I am a female and I was in the front row and he was wearing only that vest over his chest, so he could have sung the New York telephone directory and I would have thought it was GREAT.
But my point is this: I bet more people than not only see Sting in concert ONE or TWO times. Definitely only one or two times a tour. So when I hear (or read) die-hard, long-time fans complain because they have already heard these songs before, they have already seen this performance before, I have to wonder what do you expect? Gosh, I've already heard all these songs too. I mean, if you have all the CDs and the Police Box Set, why not stay at home with your album covers and listen for free? It seems a little demanding to expect Sting to cater to such an elite audience. Why not just drop him a little note? "Uh, hey, I saw you play in NY last week, so don't play the same set, OK, don't play Roxanne, OK, don't play Fragile for an encore because I'm sick of it." GET REAL!!! Maybe Roxanne is one of Sting's favorite songs. Maybe he LIKES TO PLAY IT AT EVERY CONCERT. Maybe he thinks it is one of his TRADEMARKS. Maybe most people expect to hear it. I did! Maybe the whole idea of a concert tour is to PROMOTE THE NEW ALBUM. So he played TEN SONGS from TST and filled in the rest with old FAVORITES. So what. I think the average audience member is pleased with that. When you play music to pay your bills and support your family, maybe being wildly creative and experimental is not the way to go. HAven't some people said they found TSC tour disappointing in concert?
Just because Sting and his band don't play all request shows and don't play for three hours doesn't mean they are ripping off the fans. These guys have lives, too. Personally, I think Dominic Miller is probably too busy with the 12 girls he gave backstage passes to last Friday night to rehearse 24/7.
And Sting, hey doesn't he have a WIFE? And KIDS? And what several houses or whatever that personal life post was about? Obviously, Sting has other stuff to do. I doubt his mission in life is to keep us from being bored.
And, bottom line, HOW could you be bored with his concerts? Even if you had already seen the same set the night before? He is one of the best live performers around. His band is great. The songs played live are ten times better than the recorded ones. He's gorgeous. Until all of us are as successful and popular and talented as Sting let's be a little bit more understanding. I got my money's worth - I think most people do. And my tickets were $26.50. I wouldn't pay that to see Jesus Christ in concert.
I'll be quiet again now.
