I just got home from Sting's last NY gig "for a long long time" (his words!) I had another thrilling evening--here is a little review with my personal comments of course.
The opening act was different tonight (and apparently last night as well). (BTW, an interesting thing happened to Paula Cole Sun night. She lost her voice after 15 minutes and left the stage!) Anyway, tonight's act was called Liquid Soul, a band from Chicago. They took the stage promptly at 8pm. They were primarily horns, had a trumpet player, sax (who also played clarinet), and a trombone, a drummer, guitar, bass player, and this guy doing funky things spinning records. They also had a rapper who rapped a couple of songs, one of them was customized for NY audience and mentioned Sting. It was cute. They reminded me of Tower of Power and were actually quite enjoyable!
Sting came on around 9 I guess. He looked great as ever, and of course the same set list, but of all 4 shows I saw, tonight he had the most energy and seemed actually in a good mood! He smiled a lot and was much more playful with the band members, high fiving them, and at the end he goosed Vinnie! He danced and ran around the stage a lot more tonight than the other nights, and it was interesting to me how different the crowd was also. I can only assume it was in response to his energy. The other nights the crowd was very sedate, as far as staying seated anyway. Tonight almost the entire crowd was up starting with When the world is running down, and never sat down again! I for one was thrilled because I was sick of being told to sit down when I needed to dance! There was quite a different energy, and it was really a special thing.
Oh, before the show I got to meet up with yet another member of this list, Steve A, and he was sitting in the FRONT ROW!!!!! I knew I had 2 choices--I could either die of envy or turn over my camera to him, so I chose the latter! He took lots of pix and I will get them developed tomorrow! Thanks Steve!
Before FOG, he stated that this was a special anniversary for him, that he had been living with the woman he loves for 15 years tonight, and he said anyone that has met her (like me and Bill!!) would know why he stays with her, and he said this next song is for her. How sweet!
For ISHTICSC, he read my sign once again, as well as Steve's, but no luck for either one of us. He read a lot of signs and said, "boy, this is difficult!" He chose a guy, then a girl (both with signs I think), then at the last minute chose a couple who either said or had a sign indicating that it was their anniversary, too. All four of them get up and they say hello into the mike. It was silly having them all crowd around 1 mike! The couple had been married 4 months and said that Sting sang their wedding song. So, they do a little practice as usual, but none of them can sing! 2 of them didn't know the words, the others couldn't carry a tune to save their lives, it was atrocious! We were all screaming and booing, and Sting goes, "awe shit. I think we're gonna need some help up here. I need someone who can actually SING!" I'm jumping up and down on my seat like a maniac, and he goes, "a guy..." and picks some guy close up, who actually sang VERY WELL (even better than Ross and that is saying a lot!) So this guy basically sang the whole thing by himself! Sting complemented his singing.
Another funny thing was towards the end someone gave him a little statue of liberty, like you'd get in any NYC gift shop. He picked it up like an award, and said, "I'd like to thank my producer, God, and my mother!" (Maybe a second chance after not winning any grammies?) He also picked this up again when he went to shake people's hands and leave the stage at the end.
After the show, I talked to someone (I don't want to say who) about getting a recording of the show. He said no, but gave me his name and #, so I'll see if I can work some magic and get it!
Down in front, Steve had managed to take Sting's Evian bottle, which I promptly drank from, now whatever diseases Sting has I may have, but who cares? I asked one of the crew if there were any picks lying there and he gave me one that Dominic used!
So Holly, I drank from the holy grail and have a pick from Dominic, kind of second to your possessions but I got something else! On the way out, my date gets lost for a minute and comes back with a movie poster for GDEP that he ripped down from the wall for me! This guy's a keeper, don't you think?
This was the best of the MSG shows by far, and I was very sorry that Bill, Ross, Jeremy, and Benjamin were not there to share it!
Oh, I almost forgot, instead of his usual goodbye line, Sting said goodnight NY, we won't be coming back for a long long time but then he said, god bless, goodnight, I WILL see you again!!!!! (So all hope is not lost)
Now i must figure out how to get into the taping of SNL next Sat. Anybody have any ideas or want to come with me?
