Alright, I've been on vacation so this concert review is a little late. Sorry.
I saw Sting at the Worcester Centrum on saturday, March 9th. Impressive!
Of the three times I've seen him, this was his best performance.
Concrete Blonde opened. I had listened to one of their tapes in order to know some of their songs before the concert. The tape was pretty good, but there concert performance was bad. They had very little life in them. Most of the audience seemed to have the same impression. Very few people cheered for them.
Then Sting appeared. He came on stage and told a few jokes. Then he told a story. Sting was at a bar one day when a musician was playing at the other end. At the end of his performance, Sting introduced himself.
"Hi, I'm Sting."
"You didn't look like Lionel Richie."
After complementing his work, Sting asked the performers name.
"I'm Vinx."
"Just the one name, huh?"
Sting then told the audience that he was to take no responsibility for the "weird shit" that Vinx was about to do. Sting went backstage and Vinx came out. This guy was great. By himself, he sang and played congos. I won't give away his comedy/music routine, but it was funny! Ten minutes later, Sting and his band came out. The playlist (in no particular order) was as follows:
Fragile was the encore.
I should note that Roxanne and Message in a Bottle *WERE NOT* accoustic versions. Roxanne was true to the original version until the middle bit. He changed to a funky blues rhythm while singing his famous "Roxanne-o".
The band played very well (I hope Sting keeps Dominic Miller). I've seen early reviews in which the band didn't know the material or didn't know what Sting wanted them to play. This was not the case at this concert.
One final note: In the tour book, Sting has an advertisement for a new narrative album of Peter and the Wolf. (I think Bowie did a Peter and the Wolf narrative a while back, too). I have another less-than-well-known narrative of The Soldier's Tale (released on Sting's Pangea label). This was hard to come by, so I imagine the Peter and the Wolf narrative will be difficult to find also....
