Elysee Arena - Turku, Finland

by Lauri Pekonen on March 17, 1996

Okay, here's the songlist from Sting's Turku concert and some comments and opinions by me. If you feel this might spoil you something, DON'T READ ONWARD!!

The band:

The songs are following. They're in a wrong order, but it was something like this (i didn't write anything down, but typed them from my memory):

  1. If I Ever Lose My Faith On You
  2. If You Love Someone Set Them Free
  3. The Hounds Of Winter
  4. I Hung My Head
  5. Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot (better as a live version)
  6. I Was Brought To My Senses (excellent stuff!)
  7. You Still Touch Me
  8. Fields Of Gold (somewhat dull, maybe it's because he has played this one so much it has got boring.)
  9. Seven Days (always been one of my favorites. Vinnie kicks ass!)
  10. Nothing 'Bout Me
  11. Synchronicity II (awesome!!)
  12. Roxanne (this one drove the audience wild)
  13. Englishman In New York (i'm surprised he played this one too)
  14. Bed's Too Big Without You (this song had a fun rap section by Kenny Kirkland)
  15. When The World Is Running Down You Make The Best Of What's Still Around (this was somewhat a climax of this concert to me. Kenny's solo on this one was even better than the one on "Bring On The Night"! All the musicians got freaked out. Vince pedaled the bass drum in 1/8ths!)
  16. This Cowboy Song (better as live too. The horns were a very good addition.)
  17. All Four Seasons
  18. She's Too Good For Me
  19. Twenty Five To Midnight
  20. I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying
  21. Lithium Sunset (the audience clapped their hands in a very demanding pace - and the encore could be guessed)
  22. Fragile (with Sting on guitar, Dominic on bass and Vince on an egg)

So, it was a pretty long set after all, Sting took care that the audience got something with their money. Too bad I was sitting so far away I couldn't see the face-expressions of the musicians. But it was anyway a great experience plus a first time for me to see my guru live.

Compared to his previous tour, I would have liked to see Shape Of My Heart (maybe in place of Fields Of Gold) and King Of Pain. But one cannot have everything, right?

There's much to expect for you who haven't still seen him on this tour. In my opinion, the arrangements were more clever than ever. Hope to see him again someday!

Hope you could make some sense of this, as I didn't polish this mail very well. Sorry about the inaccuracy in songs' order, I got the idea of posting this list not until after the gig.

Oh wow... I'm exctatic. I'm just home from Sting's concert in Turku, Finland. All I can say: Sting is absolutely great. Anyone can sound fairly good on records - Sting sounds suberb - but who can sound equally good live? Sting can.

The concert was a good show and proves Sting is a true professional (along with his band of course) as well as a wonderful artist. His singing sounded the same as on albums, even better if you consider you could actually see him at the same time. The man is also in great physical condition: he wore a black leather coat the whole almost two hours and didn't even sweat much. The concert consisted on mainly newish songs from the new album and Ten Summoner's Tales, but there also were a few Police songs and accidental pieces from older albums.

Way to go rest of Europe! You still have the joy ahead of you! Now we just have to wait for the next album and tour. I just hope one of the concerts will be shown live on TV so I'll have some other memory too with my tour t-shirt and cap... Long live Sting!
