Can vouch for the fact the Manchester gig was superb too. Well worth the drive up from London (at the time we booked, everywhere else had sold out).
I don't think many of the people in the audience approved (or recognised!) the support act. But for me having Nitin Sawhney (who had a highly acclaimed album, Beyond Skin, released here in the UK last year) supporting was a great bonus! Just a shame all the people around me who obviously didn't want to see anyone other than Sting decided to talk loudly all the way through their set. I found this rude to the extreme! Just lucky that the short people sitting behind us who were making the most noise couldn't see Sting when everyone stood up!
Out of interest, who supported at the NEC?
Sounds like the set list was much the same. I loved the 2nd encore (with the solo acoustic version of Message in a Bottle, followed by Fragile). We'd almost made it to the exit of the arena by then, because the fact the band left the stage and came back on again twice foxed us. As anyone who has their car parked in a huge car park at one of these kinds of gigs knows, leaving the moment the performance ends is vital if you want to avoid queuing for hours to get out.
Don't remember All This Time or Mad About You being played at the US gigs (not the bootlegs I saw), nice to go back to that era. Everyone went mad when they played the Police classics. I have to say that Sting and the band (who are often forgotten) didn't sing or play a note wrong all night. It was mighty impressive to see a performer with the energy and willing to perform such a long set.
Yes, the merchandise was rip-off-ly expensive. £100 for a cheap looking fleece! We bought a programme for a keep-sake, but I wouldn't waste any more of my money. The photographs are £50... we got offered a free set for handing out some leaflets, but having looked, they didn't seem worth the bother!
