I was in the "front balcony" but I had no idea that there were FOUR mezzanine levels before the balcony!! I was in NOSE BLEED COUNTRY! That was bad enough, but I could barely see the stage! It was defintely an obstructed view seat, but no one informed me of that! The show started, and Bobby McFerrin was on first, and he was on forever, doing this boring long song, if you could call it that, so I finally decided out of disgust to get up and see if I could get my seat changed. (I spied SEVERAL empty seats in the orchestra!).
So, I spoke with a manager who was very nice but told me there were no seats down lower to give me. There was one higher in the balcony but center, so since I couldn't see anyway, I took it. I was much better, but I really wouldn't have even recognized Sting if I didn't know it was him (and I have great vision)!
So.....at intermission, I took matters into my own hands and moved myself down to the orchestra----guess where??? IN THE FRONT ROW!!!!!!!!!! Way on the side, but you know I wasn't complaining!
During intermission, I met Robin Quivers who was extremely friendly and nice. I asked for a picture w/ her, and she said sure, and we posed for one, but the usher came over and said no pictures! Robin said, oh come on, can't she just take one little one? But no! (I don't have much luck with my camera when Sting's around!)
Anyway, then I saw Marc McGuen who interviewed Sting and Trudie on CBS this morning, and who won on celebrity Jeopardy against Robin Q Mon night!! I told him he better watch out coz Robin was mad!
ANYWAY, I also saw Fred Norris and Jackie the Jokeman Martling from the Stern show, and that was it for celebrity citings, except of course for the stage--which is of course what you all want to hear about!
Here is the set list, with my comments!
(they came in from the back, couldn't see em!) -- it was short and I think they were wearing funky outfits.
they did this a capella I think, it was really a beautiful song and a LOVELY way to start the event!
TOO LONG! Bobby just made all these animal noises, one after the other, after the other....zzzzzz...
not a huge Lyle fan, but he was ok--actually I think I missed this song when I was out talking to the manager
this guy was in the movie Evita-I missed most of this song, too, too bad coz the end sounded great! I think this is on Carnival so we can all hear it! (I'm picking up my copy tomorrow!)
lovely ballad she dedicated to her parents
he said he wrote it just for this evening--he said, it's a new song, but it sounds just like all my old ones! It was nice Lyle, Sting, Elton & Bonnie--Long Tell Texan--this was very funny!
Sting came out with a HUMONGOUS flourescent green cowboy hat! Looked like a cartoon! Too bad I really couldn't see how he looked in it, but it looked ridiculous from up on high! I didn't care for the song very much though.
this was a beautiful lullabye!
it was ok, but Zucchero was funny, he said he was doing this song by Verdi, and he hopes we don't hate it! When he introduced him, Sting said that when he was walking with Zucchero in Italy, people were climbing over Sting to get to Zucchero, meaning that nobody noticed him because of what a big star Zucchero is in Italy. I wasn't very impressed with this song.
I think this was a violin solo, but I can't remember.
this is the chairperson of the Rainforest Foundation. I tried very hard to pay attention to what she was saying, but she is very old (or at least sounded it) and her speech was BORING, I went to powder my nose.
Stevie sounded great, not one of my favorite songs, it was a slow ballad.
Stevie gave Sting and Trudie each a present--identical twin somethings, but I couldn't hear it, and I sure as heck couldn't see it! Well, you know what they say, it's the thought that counts!
nice
this was a song from his childhood, he said they played it before every soccer game and with the brass band, it always brought tears to his eyes--very beautiful.
INTERMISSION (This is when I made my move, and it was a good thing because Sting was waiting for me to be able to see him before he sang too much!)
extremely funny--made fun of how long Bobby McFerrin was on for when he had only 12 minutes. He said they only asked him here to have someone Jewish on the show--to show that the Rainforests affect everyone!
this is an old classic--Temptations maybe? It was GREAT! And now I was sitting in the front row!!!!! Sting was wearing dark trousers, a black vest with a black leather jacket over it--he looked devine as ever. The first half he was wearing a long black coat with tails. Anyway, his hair is growing a bit and what can I say? The man looks great!
the old classic, very well done!
he said, just to balance things out!!! LOL! This was the second highlight of the show for me, I couldn't stop laughing the whole time, and oh, I forgot to say that for all these songs in the second half the remaining 5 stars were sitting on the sides of the stage singing backup, and Sting had a tambourine, that for the most part he wasn't playing, but one time he banged it on his head! So cute! Anyway, while Elton was singing this, everyone on stage was laughing too!
cute
this was a song that Elton wrote I think he said! Anyway, at one point Elton was moving very sexy towards Bonnie and kind of rubbing up real close to her--after the song, Bonnie goes, I need a towel! You sure could have fooled me on that one, Elton! For this song, Bonnie also played her guitar Bonnie and JT--Barefootin--both playing their guitars and singing--more uptempo, very nice!
I never heard this song, the lyrics reminded me of Travelin Man, it was ok.
OK, this was most definitely the HIGHLIGHT!!!! These are 2 of my favorite songs in the world, and he did a GREAT job! At this point, he took off his nice leather jacket, and was just wearing this skin tight, high collared vest. All I can say is MMMMMMMMMMMM!
Anyway, he was dancing around, banging his tambourine, and having a great time, I was in heaven! He did a great Smokey Robinson impersonation for Tears of a Clown! Oh! I am still hearing this wonderful song in my head!
a classic!
and another!
Sting sits down next to Stevie at his piano, on my side of the stage, took a picture! And they were talking real low to each other,
Stevie: what to you want to do?
Sting: I don't know...(long pause).. let's do one of your songs!
Stevie: want to do that city thing?
Sting: yeah, let's do that!
I didn't really know it, it was OK.
I don't know whose song this is, maybe Stevie's? It was a great song and they sang it for a while, getting the audience into it. At the end Sting introduced everybody, and brought out Trudie--she was wearing that same green Oriental looking dress she was wearing to the oscars I think--I just saw her in it in some mag--anyway, she looked GORGEOUS!!!!! Her hair was beautiful-pulled back in some flowery arrangement--I took a picture of her too!
So that was it! Hope you all enjoyed my little synopsis!
Oh, by the way, Brandford's name was in the program, but I do not believe he was there!
THANKS FOR COMING, THANKS FOR LISTENING, I'LL WRITE TO YOU AGAIN,
GOOD NIGHT!!!!
Sting performed and carried off the show as usual. Anyone see any reviews of it yet? I will check some papers later today. This year Sting didnt do any on his own songs - it was all Motown/Stevie Wonder stuff except for one "chidhood" song where Sting choose a song from his Newcastle days - Northumbrian pipes played by a gal from England. That was one of my favorite songs of the night. Celebrities were everywhere including Julia Roberts - checking out Lyle Lovett I suppose. It was a neat evening. Any others have some thoughts on the show as I am curious.
