It's 2.30 am here, I've just come home from Verona and I can hardly keep my eyes open, but I can't help posting a couple of thoughts on what I saw tonight.
Italian fans, wasn't tonight's concert in the beautiful Arena of Verona much better than the Milan one in January? Two main improvements: Cheb Mami's presence, a quite unexpected surprise, and much more varied versions of Roxanne and BOTN/WTW. The volume was just perfect: every instrument was clear, perhaps thanks to the open and relatively small space of the Arena. Terrific arrangements, both of new and old songs. The only weak point remains, IMO, Brand New Day which, at least in the two concerts I saw, doesn't seem to work live.
I kept watching Sting with my binoculars, and I noticed something that would make bass teachers shudder: sometimes he used his left thumb, and occasionally even his index, to hold notes on the E string, reaching the keys from above the neck of the bass, not from below, as you usually see bass players do (I hope I made myself clear).
How I envy you, people from countries where Sting still has to play. This was his last Italian date, and now we'll have to wait for his next album to see him live again. Enjoy your concerts for those of us who will not be able to follow him abroad.
