I have just been at Sting's concert in Vienna and it was marvellous!
I'm no blind fanatic. I didn't like the Mercury-Falling-concert. But this one was incredible!!!
In an earlier posting in Yahoo-Club I have said that Sting is more for CDs and not for dancing. But how did I dance!!! I bend my head in shame to have said this.
Tonight I'm a happy man.
If Sting would have cancelled his concert because of the political situation in Austria (so was the - false - news two months ago) I wouldn't believe in the world anymore. He didn't. I love him more than ever ...
19:50, Viennese City Hall: The ceiling-lighting goes out, the stage is wrapped in dark blue. The crowd is screaming. People enter the stage, one of them - apparently one of the keyboarders - with crutches. Looks strange in the blue shadows.
I have a good position and can see to the corner where they came from. Where is Sting? Then I can see someone approaching slowly. Tall, slender. A man gives him a guitar not a bass, but I realise: This is Sting. Then: Flashlight. The crowd is enthusiastic.
It's my fourth Sting-concert and this is always one of the most exciting moments: A shadow approaching . is this Sting? He is! The first view on him. To be in the same room with Sting: Always a realisation that kills me. Sounds stupid for a man of thirty-three but who cares? The band intones A Thousand Years, then for the first time we can hear Sting 's incredible voice.
What follows I can only describe with the words "marvellous, terrific, incredible".
I'm no blind fanatic who praises everything just because it's Sting. I didn't like the Mercury-Falling-concert very much. It was too soft for my taste. I missed a certain healthy aggressiveness.
And exactly this I got that night in an extent I would have never expected in my highest dreams. It was so POWERFUL!!! So dynamic. It was a pop-rock-concert as I want to hear it. With a tremendous strength behind every tone, be it in an aggressive song like "Set Them Free" or in a ballad like "Fields Of Gold".
And the crowd felt the same way. The mood got better and better. Happy people dancing, singing and clapping their hands. Or just swinging their bodies to the rhythm of the music.
The selection of the songs was great. Almost all songs of BND (I missed only Ghost Story), highlights from his other albums, the well known Police-classics (No Message In The Bottle), no song from Mercury-Falling (which I personally appreciated).
Suddenly he starts to sing a German song from the "Three-Penny-Opera" by Bert Brecht and Kurt Weil. "Und der Haifisch, der hat Zähne. Und die trägt er im Gesicht ...". About ten years ago he has taken part in a performance in Hamburg - I think - with Italian singer Gianna Nannini and another (American?) guy whom I don't remember. I knew what it was about but the girl next to me was laughing with a puzzled face. Then the song changed into "Moon over Bourbon Street". The atmospheres of the two songs are similar. Was there anything to criticise? Perhaps . "Roxanne" was a little bit to long, I think, and at the beginning of "Englishman in New York" the band lost the rhythm for a moment. But who needs perfection? And this incredible voice!!! I can't understand how he can sing for two hours with this strength and - when he's on tour - several times a week for more than a year! Thank you god that you have given Sting both: the talent to write great songs and this marvellous voice. You aren't that generous very often. After two unforgettable hours he leaves us in an awesome mood. Some people -couples- continue dancing to the sound of Desert Rose which now comes from CD.
I'm in the subway-station waiting for the next train. A guy next to me -obviously British- talks on the mobile phone in an enthusiastic voice: "It was excellent, excellent! Pure Sting!". Other people smiling at him.
