by Josh Corwin on June 25, 1999

Hey there gang...Just got home....What an unbelievable crazy night...am a little drunk and very tired so I will give a full story tomorrow...here are the big points:

  1. waited outside and took pics with Sting and Branford (stage man let me in front of barrier)
  2. sat first row for show
  3. sat next to kenny's entire family and spoke with them
  4. they were the nicest most darling people
  5. they gave me and my parents tickets to the private reception afterwards
  6. I went backstage with sting and took picture
  7. went to reception in a private place with sting, branford, jeff watts, don alias, others...can't remember now took pictures, autographs, a hug from sting and a beer...highlight of night was Sting, in all aspects, although the kindness and generosity of the kirkland family was extraordinary.... sting's one song was spectacular..will post more tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I didn't have quite the night that lucky bastard Josh had, but it was pretty cool nonetheless. The room was only half full when I spotted a lot of activity in the center of the room. It was Sting, sitting right there in the center section (I had better seats than him!) So I went over and couldn't believe he was just sitting there. Everyone was asking for an autograph, and he was all smiles, signing every one of them. It's amazing the kind of presence he has. I was right in front of him, and he was slouching in his chair, yet he was the largest person in the room. The autograph signing was slowly turning into a frenzy, so a security guard asked him if he wanted to continue or stop. Sting asked to stop. But he continued signing. But just as I got in front of him, the guard kindly asked people to disperse. This was my last chance, so I burst out "Sting, can we see you again after the show?" He didn't hear me so he leaned over with a strain on his faced and again I asked: "Will we be able to see you after the show?" (It sounded even stupider the second time around.) He sort of shrugged his shoulders and gave me a "I dunno" kind of look. So I extended my hand, he leaned out of his seat and shook it. It's amazing how big his hands are. It's the kind of handshake you never forget.

So anyway the show starts with a taped segment of clips from "Bring on the Night" and interviews with Branford, Sting, Harry, and Kenny's family. Branford and the guys came on and did their thing. Harry Connick Jr. was standing in the aisle against the wall a few feet from me. Harry closed the first half with a very disappointing number on piano. It sounded like he was just hitting chords- very choppy and dissonant. It dragged on and on until someone yelled out "play already." I feel sorry for his fans who came to see him.

The second half was much better. David Sanchez really lit up the place with his Afro-Cuban beats. And then, the curtain lifted and there was Sting, sitting cross-legged and very relaxed on a chair. He sang "How Like a Song" (not sure if that's the title though). There were no pictures allowed, but flashes went off incessantly when Sting was on stage. He sang beautifully, in a lower register as I guess he does now, but he hit the LONG and HIGH notes flawlessly. His signing was really powerful.

After that I don't really remember what happened, it sort of ended quickly. There was no encore, which kind of surprised me. So I got out, and by a twist of fate I took the right exit, because it was the backstage exit, and a couple of minutes later, Sting came out. He went right passed me, but I didn't dare take a picture from so close. It looked like he was heading for a cab, and someone yelled out "he's going into a cheap cab!" Everyone followed him like a school of fish, and people were applauding him. I followed suite, but he quickly disappeared in the restaurant next door which suddenly got a rush of customers!

So anyway, Sting was great, sang great, looked healthier than ever, and still commanded the room even though it's been over three years since his last album. He only sang one song but it was definitely worth it. Now Josh, how the hell do you get so damn lucky?

I have a couple of so-so pictures that I will forward to D&W.
