This is the first chance I have had to write about the great Sting concert I recently saw. It was HOT in two ways. The first was the temperature (mid-to-low 90's F. with high humidity during the day and we were still sweating up-until-midnight) and second reason it was HOT was because of the music. Sting did a fantastic job. I have to say that Sting's voice is in top form. I have not heard him sound this good in a long time. I have to say that I too enjoyed the light show; it was NOT overly done. I especially enjoyed the mood that was set by the lights (along with the photos) during the performance of "Roxanne".

I was a little surprised at the amount of playing the horn section did during the concert. I was expecting a little less trombone/saxaphone, but I enjoyed it just the same. I guess I was expecting the horns to be used only during the Mercury Falling songs, not the whole concert.

Here are a few general comments: I did not see any of Sting's family at the concert (but I did see Mr. Miles Copeland on the side of the stage towards the end of the show). Also, I was very disappointed that Sting has decided to use 'taped' backup singers on a few songs (he also used a taped backing vocal of himself during "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free").

One last comment, when Sting decides to perform "Mad About You" he ends up performing atleast one song from each one of his solo albums (ie. The Dream Of The Blue Turtles: "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free," ...Nothing Like The Sun: "Fragile" & "Englishman In New York," The Soul Cages: "Mad About You," Ten Summoner's Tales: "Seven Days," "Fields Of Gold" & "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" & Mercury Falling: "The Hounds Of Winter," "I Hung My Head," "I Was Brought To My Senses," "Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot," "You Still Touch Me," "I'm So Happy, I Can't Stop Crying" & "Lithum Sunset"). I like the idea that he wants to peform songs from all his albums.

Here is the set list of Sting's show in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the Blockbuster Pavilion on June 30, 1996:

  1. The Hounds Of Winter
  2. I Hung My Head
  3. I Was Brought To My Senses
  4. Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot (seemed to drag a little bit, maybe it is because I'm not a big fan of this song)
  5. If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free
  6. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (crowd loved this song)
  7. Seven Days
  8. Mad About You
  9. You Still Touch Me
  10. I'm So Happy, I Can't Stop Crying (quickly becoming the "divorce" anthem song)
  11. Fields Of Gold
  12. Synchronicity II (once again, the crowd got into this song, along with Roxanne; I see a trend here -- I think the concert goers really like to hear the old-Police tunes!)
  13. Roxanne
  14. Bring On The Night/When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around
  15. Demolition Man
  16. Englishman In New York (fun, yet different rap in the middle of this song)
  17. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
  18. Every Breath You Take
  19. Lithum Sunset (great rock'n'roll version)
  20. Fragile

Hope you learned something from the review. Take care.
