Sandstone Amphitheater - Bonner Springs, (Kansas City), Kansas, United States

by Byron Vogel on July 24, 2000

Good Lord, what a brilliant performance. It almost made me sick to think that only a few nights earlier this amphitheater was crawling with Britney Spears fans, seeing as how Sting needed to play only one note from A Thousand Years to surpass her in amout of real music performed. Anyway, his best number was probably Moon Over Bourbon Street. He often switched to a scratchy, Louis Armstrong-esque style, and he even howled at the end. I was a little disappointed he didn't play a single track off Mercury Falling (I love All Four Seasons but would have settled for You Still Touch Me). I just couldn't believe how awesome he was. He's truly a musical genius. You can tell he has been heavily schooled in music theory, history, and all forms of music, not to mention literature and language arts. His lyrics would still be great even if they were never put to music. Oh yeah, here's the setlist:

  1. Thousand Years
  2. If You Love Somebody
  3. After The Rain Has Fallen
  4. We'll Be Together
  5. Perfect Love Gone Wrong
  6. All This Time
  7. Seven Days
  8. Fill Her Up
  9. Moon Over Bourbon Street
  10. Fields Of Gold
  11. Tommorow We'll See
  12. Every Litte Thing She Does Is Magic
  13. Englishman in New York
  14. Brand New Day
  15. Desert Rose
  16. Roxanne
  17. Bring On The Night/When The World

Encore 1:

  1. If I Ever Lose Faith In You
  2. Every Breath You Take

Encore 2:

  1. Message In A Bottle
  2. Fragile

There was a girl in the crowd holding a sign requesting to be a backup singer/dancer, and he let her up on stage to sing backup on Brand New Day. She did a good job but she *almost* came in too early on the first chorus.

Bottleneck packing there too (actually, bottleneck exiting). And it's a good thing I don't drink beer. I could fill my refrigerator twice for the price of four beers at a concert.

I am back from seeing him in KC. All I can say is.....WOW! I knew it was going to be good but I had no idea. I must admit when he first came out, I thought I was going to be a teeny bit disappointed because his voice was a bit "rough." (well, come on, he's been on the go for how long now?)

Anyway, my fear was soon out the window because by the end of the song, he was warmed up and just his normal, wonderful self. I had to drive 3 1/2 hours to KC to see him but it was WELL worth it. I wish that I lived in a venue where I could be eligible for back stage passes. I'm sure one of the local KC radio stations were doing just that and I would have been all over that, let me tell you. Not only is he (and his entourage) very talented, but nice as well. There was a lady in the 3rd or 4th row who had a sign saying she wanted to be a back up singer. He read it out loud and 4 or 5 songs later, had her come on stage for "Brand New Day." She got to stand next to him and got a hug before she left the stage. I'm guessing that's going to be one of those "once in a lifetime" things for her. I am extremely jealous and wish I could have afforded tickets a bit closer. As it was, I paid for two so I could only get 35 rows back. Oh well, at least I was able to go and see him in the flesh. Tracy C opened for him (her last night with him) and she was very good as well.

My fingers are crossed for those who may get to meet him. Good Luck and enjoy!
