Polaris Amphitheater - Columbus, Ohio, United States

by Krissy Oechslin on August 1, 1996

Hey everyone, it's nice to be back -- I was having some serious e-mail withdrawal without the list's daily large quantities of mail...

Anyway, I've been anxiously waiting for the list to go back up so I can share my first ever sting concert experience with all of you guys. I went to the Columbus, Ohio show last Saturday. It was phenomenal. He did the same set list as the DC and Atlanta shows (that people posted) except he left out "let your soul be your pilot" and "mad about you," and he didn't replace them with anything, which sucked. I really wanted to hear mad about you, too. But back to the concert...the first 3 songs, Hounds Of Winter, I Hung My Head, and I Was Brought To My Senses -- of course I enjoyed them but most of the people there didn't know them at all so for those songs the crowd was pretty quiet. Then he did If You Love Somebody...and everyone got up and started dancing, and they didn't sit down until he finished that and Every Little Thing...when he played 7 Days. But then he did you Still Touch Me and everyone loved it. Then he did I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying, where he usually has someone come up on stage and sing with him. Pre-concert, I made big signs that said "Sting I Love You" so he'd notice me and ask me on stage to sing with him (in my dreams!). The *!#@!* amphitheater security wouldn't let me bring the signs in (or my backpack, either -- I was forced to have words with security). Anyway, it didn't really matter -- Lyle Lovett, the opening act, sang with Sting instead. It was pretty cute, but poor lyle -- having to sing someone else's song about divorce to all of us. After that, he played mostly Police stuff, which everyone seemed to like more than his own stuff. Kenny had an incredible solo in the Bring On The Night/When The World Is Running Down medley, and the horn players were up to their crazy little dance steps again. Oh, I almost forgot -- in I'm So Happy...Sting messed up the words! He started the lawyer verse one verse too soon, so he corrected himself and sort of grimaced. One of my friends pointed out his goatee, which I would have missed if not shown it -- it looks either like he needs a shower really bad or the shadow of the microphone. Anyway, it was an incredible concert, I spent WAY too much on t-shirts and all that, though I didn't go all out and buy the $175 limited-edition lithograph they had. Just out of curiousity, none of you guys bought it, did you? I bet they didn't sell too many of those...I better stop reminiscing now, before I get carried away...

I too was at the Columbus show on July 27, having been to the concert the week before in Pittsburgh, I can compare the two. I thought the Columbus show was TERRIFIC. If we had not had the mailing list problems with xmission, my post from the Pitts. show would have been on the list. I have only seen concerts from this tour, but I must say that I was very impressed with the whole thing. I enjoyed the fact that I could sit and actually SEE the band and Sting playing and enjoying themselves doing so. It was refreshing to be able to take in the whole concert.

I thought that Sting was much more loose and comfortable with the audience at this show. He seemed happier and so did the audience. He really played with his music and he DEFINATELY played longer. Although he did not put "Mad About You" and LYSBYP back in the set list, he did much more musical improvisation with the ones he did play.

As for Kenny Kirkland, it was great to hear him in his solo, I have never had the benefit of hearing him live, and enjoyed it very much.

I may be an unusual Sting fan, but I loved the show and thought he was quite charming...concidering his usual.
