Sacramento Valley Amphitheater - Marysville, (Sacramento), California, United States

by Bill Bredice on August 2, 2000

I think first-timers to the shows are really, really enjoying a Sting concert, and that's who he is playing to. They aren't geared to us fans that have seen dozens of Sting shows. I have lost count of the number of times after I have told someone I'm going to the Sting concert that they ask "Does he do any Police songs?". It's the same thing when the guy sitting next to you at the concert says before the show "Does he do any Police songs?". It seems that many concert attendees are first-time Sting concert attendees, and they are absolutely thrilled with the concert.

I had a friend go with Ross and me to the Gorge show and she was absolutely in awe of the concert. She said she especially enjoyed When the World is Running Down, Every Breath and Roxanne...the 3 songs that we are all tired of because we have seen them performed countless times. When we played Ghost Story in the car on the way home to demonstrate how nice it would have been to have that song played at the show, she seemed indifferent to it.

Can someone post a setlist for Sacramento? If the show is truly 95 minutes, then he has cut a song or two because he played for 105 or 110 minutes this past weekend.

I'm back at work after two days off to travel to the Sacramento show. Here's my so-called review and the set list. It's long (as always) so delete me now if you don't care!

Got to the new Sac Valley Amph really early (like 3 p.m.) just sort of wandered in and wandered around the place. Scoped out where my seat was as was excited to see that it was the best seat in the house! (thanks to Teresa for putting me in touch with a guy who bought the seats off eBay and needed to sell one, and thanks to my husband for not telling me I couldn't spend the money!). Continued to wander around. No one ever stopped me or asked what I was doing. Talked with some members of the Amph crew. When sound check started about 4:30, I moseyed down to about the 6th row center and sat. I was the only one there. Alas, Sting wasn't there and didn't do the sound check with the band, but it was still very cool. The band played ELTSDIM and I sang along loudly. It was like the band was playing the song (which is one of my favs) just for me. Very cool. Spoke briefly with Kipper, who is a nice guy.

Must mention that it was excruciatingly hot. The kind of hot where sweat just pours off you even when you're sitting still. I left to get something to eat and change into some non-sweaty clothes. Apparently, Sting arrived late and did a sound check while I was scarfing down a Chinese chicken salad. Figures....

Must also mention that the Amph is in the middle of nowhere farmland and traffic was a nightmare after the concert.

Anyway, returned to the concert with my two (Ohhhh, Roxanne is on the radio right now, synchronicity) bouquets of flowers. Yes, Bill and Ross, I took flowers. Here's my logic - first, it's probably my one and only chance to ever be in the front row, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to somehow get noticed. And second, I was hoping the flowers WOULD get me at least an eye contact with Sting and Dom. I'm not delusional. I don't think Sting takes them home for the top of the piano - I mean, come on, they were just a $10 bunch of flowers from some local grocery store with a flower department - but if some janitor sweeping the stage takes them home to his wife, I'm happy with that.

KD Lang was quite good with the audience. Great voice, seems like a nice lady. Handled the women screaming "We love you KD" with tact and humor. Enjoyed her.

So..getting ready for Sting, I warned the men behind me that I'm a stander/dancer, and they were quite gracious (actually I think they enjoyed watching my butt all night). Crowd stood for the faster songs, sat for the slower ones. Security was OK, let me take pictures with my little spy camera (tiny little thing) even though there was supposed to be no photo taking allowed. In fact, as people walked into the concert they were given a piece of paper/envelope with the BND cover and a form inside to send away for a FREE (well, $2 S&H) concert photo because *Sting...wants you to have a lasting memory. That's why he has once again selected the renowned music photographer Guido Karp to capture his tour. Now his live concert photographs are available to you.* Have they done this at any other concerts??

I do agree that I'd like to hear some other songs, but I knew I wasn't going to (when Sting says set list, he means SET), so I didn't expect anything and I wasn't disappointed. Jason didn't look like he was having fun at all (did I mention it was hot as hell??). Kipper could have fun at a funeral. Didn't hear the back-up singer at all. Dom seemed to have guitar problems throughout. Broke a string, kept going to the wings to confer with a tech, etc. There was one song (can't remember which but it was in the first 1/3 of the show) where the sound of keyboards could distinctly be heard but neither Kipper nor Jason were playing! Jason actually sat with his hands folded in his lap! Chris' presence and participation is much less than the early CA shows last year.

A woman gave Sting a pair of white, ladies terry cloth slippers (!?!?!) Sting took them, then a few minutes later, when the song was done, he looked at them and said *I've been given a lot of things. I've been given underwear from Victoria's Secret. I've been given bras; I've been given flowers (!), but I've never been given a pair of slippers. I don't know what that means.* I don't either. But it would be funny if anyone is close enough at the upcoming concerts to give him another pair.

Not as much Armstrong voice on Moon. Didn't sing Tomorrow We'll See (has he dropped this because it's slower?), didn't do Mad About You (I was disappointed) did I'm So Happy (very dull version, no audience partner). Loved Roxanne. Would give my left arm to hear Message the *old fashioned way* - FAST. Missed Cheb on DR.

Here's the set list (I think it's in order, since not much has changed)

  1. A Thousand Years
  2. Set Them Free
  3. After The Rain Has Fallen
  4. We'll Be Together
  5. Perfect Love...Gone Wrong
  6. All This Time
  7. Fill Her Up
  8. Seven Days
  9. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
  10. Moon Over Bourbon Street
  11. Englishman In New York
  12. Brand New Day
  13. Roxanne
  14. Desert Rose
  15. Bring On The Night / When The World Is Running Down...
  16. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
  17. Every Breath You Take
  18. Message In A Bottle
  19. Fragile

Did a little bit of Regatta De Blanc (the yeeeaa-yeeeaa-ooos) during Roxanne which was very cool.

Really wish I was going to Concord. But have Santa Barb to look forward to. Thanks for being so kind, thanks for coming, thanks for listening.

I attended Sting's concert at Sacramento Valley Amphitheater on August 1, 2000. I Never knew how fine Sting is, not to mention he sounds better live than on his cd's/tapes, etc. It Is by far the best concert I have attended (and I have had my share of concerts) I rate him up there with Tom Petty, GREAT!!!!

Thank you for giving the Sacramento Valley a great time....
