Greek Theater - Los Angeles, California, United States

by Dawn W. Ballou with Fred on August 11, 2000

Here we are in LA, and so far, so good. Fred and I got here just yesterday, but already it feels as if we have been here weeks.

This may be somewhat incoherent....it's after midnight...we're exhausted....still.....thrilled to be here though....delete now if you don't want to here our drabble....it's a small stack of info...

Anyway, the show last night was amazing! We had front row seats, so how could we think of even complaining. We got there pretty early on Wednesday night -- hoping to poke around, and hoping we might stumble into a soundcheck, or something like that...

Fred ran into Danny Q inside who quickly laughed saying he was "popping up in the strangest places"! Fred ranted and raved about Tomorrow being yanked from the show, Danny said that Sting thought the crowd was yawning a bit after hearing both Perfect World AND Tomorrow We'll See, way too many people getting up going to the bathroom, etc. (how rude!). Anyway, he said it wasn't HIS decision, and basically just does what the boss says.

I found Russ standing around as well and approached him. Is he a shy guy? Not sure, but he was nice enough. Said the band was amazing, tour was amazing...he's really hoping to go to South Africa and Japan. Not much more to say. Talk about being on autopilot...

Bumped into a few Compaq's running around the venue looking for fellow co-workers. We had a small discussion about Compaq and the whole ticket manipulation they have somehow managed. He was not only smug about it all, but said, well, of course we're getting the good tickets, we got them six months before they went on sale. Duh!

Sure enough, Sting showed up to do a sound check late in the afternoon. He did Desert Rose, After the Rain, We'll be Together, and Fill Her Up. No Cheb rehearsing, so we figured no Cheb that night. We were wrong. Opening act was Shelby Lynne. Fred really liked her -- I thought she was interesting, if nothing else, for wearing gold lame stretch pants.

Sting and company came on at about 8:40, played until about 10:20. Set list is the same as has been lately; no Tomorrow We'll See, no I'm so Happy, but Message is back in (after taking it away from the east coast). Cheb showed up for Dessert Rose, and received a HUGE audience reaction -- the entire place was up and dancing, and also really genuinely excited to hear the song, have Cheb there and all. All in all, the energy was really great. The venue is beautiful, up in the reserves of Los Feliz...stars, trees, nature...really amazing. Sting's wardrobe hasn't been discussed as of late, so I'm not sure if this outfit is new, or just unmentioned. But....it's worth mentioning. It is a black, velvet, flower-imprinted suit. Yes, suit. Tight, tight, black pants, black tank top, and fitted matching jacket. Don't know who picked that out....but, when in Rome...

The energy last night was amazing. We've decided that LA is a Sting-friendly town. We have been here only a day and a half and have heard half a dozen different Sting songs, and two separate contest sweepstakes on LA stations. One is for front row seats, and the other is for seats in Irvine, then flying to Vegas and seeing the show the following night. Incidentally, the two people sitting next to us had won the front row seats from a local radio station. He was completely shocked to have scored so well....lucky guy.

Sting also showed up as a surprise guest celebrity on the local dance music station here. It was an interesting interview. He said the reason he showed up at this station is because they were the first station here to play Desert Rose, and he wanted to show his appreciation. He spoke about Cheb, rai music, Desert Rose, politics a little bit. He also brought along both Jake and Micky who were adorable. The DJ singled them out and asked them what they wanted to do when they grow up. Jake said "work for Dad" -- Mickey said "fly to the moon". Jake said he has girlfriends all over the world -- he said he picks up girls from his dad's shows....Sting said, yes of course, they're too young for me. They were really cute. Sting was gushing how much he loved them....lots of love...very nice.

Tomorrow another show, more to enjoy...more to report.
