Greek Theater - Los Angeles, California, United States

by Jen A. Balin on August 21, 1996

How lucky can I get!! At 5:53pm last evening, I got a call from a source and was able to buy Sting tickets, face value, in a decent place. Section B, but in the middle, and surrounded by a bunch of good fans. Opening Night in LA!!!!!!!!!!!!

We're going tonight, too, but not in as good of place. Now, I'm not a critic, so I can't presume to critique His performance last night, but I will say a few words about my feelings on the eve.

YYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those drooling types (hey!--I'm one of those, too! I'd like to think I'm cool, just admiring him for his seemingly unlimited talent, but when I see him on that stage...oh, boy!), he was elegantly wearing a deep blue (almost navy) silk tunic, under a simple black suit jacket, over his now-famous black leather side zipper pants ("does he wear anything other than leather?" my husband asked..."I hope not!" I replied, grinning broadly), and his Docs. He's tanned and appearing very healthy. Lookin' good, luv!

He's in excellent voice, or at least he was last night. The music was energized, yet he seemed relaxed and easy-going. It was cool 'cause it was opening night in LA, and he and Trudie were celebrating their fourth wedding anniversary. IMHO, I will add my .02 cents re: current debates here and other places on the 'net...

To qualify myself, I've been singing most of my life, from rock to classical, from solo to choral to band work. I'm not the greatest, but experience I have much. On that note, I think the horns added a fullness to the sound that a synthesizer can't do alone. The sound waves are different from a live instrument, and although the sounds could have easily been reproduced by Kenny on the keyboards, the quality of a live instrument, not to mention the "imperfection" of a live performance, adds so much to a live show. With that said, so do the horn players! These two guys were all over the stage, interacting with Sting and the gang, having a good time! Nothing gratuitous about them at all.

The rap section in Englishman was good, too. It's done to the totally positive reaction of the crowd, and perhaps because this is LA, very fitting. But who cares? Even if you don't like that 45 seconds, the rest of the song is hardly marred...

And the sets are cool. Some background stuff is just that, but some of it is pure art! I loved the Englishman impressionistic look, and Fragile's universal look.

During Englishman, he changed "combat boots" to combat gear...is it because he's wearing the darn things?

The T-shirts are varied, worth the $$ with some definitely better than others, but I was suddenly in want of the phantom mailing-list tee...I can see the advantage and the camaraderie it would silently produce. Let's get it going!!! I bought the program, too. Like him, a feast for the eyes.

But what about the rest? Like I said, I'm no critic, and we are all fans here, one way or another, so of course it was the greatest ever! He was fabulous! Don't miss it!

Now, I figure by the discussions here that I would be considered by many of you to be one of the "geezers:" let's just say I'm over 29 (but under 35!). But I saw younger X-gens (and if you can call me a geezer, I can refer to you as the X-generation!) being more of the stick-in-the-muds downer-types than we were last night! Don't judge a persons inner self by their outer appearance...I have more enthusiasm and energy than some of you, apparently, and so does Sting...and he's 44! So back off, jack. We are his bread and butter!!

I'm seeing Him again tonight (bought these tickets a long time ago), and I expect all of you to let loose and have a good time...you only live once!

Peace and Sting.
