Anyway, on to the review:
Special Beat was incredibly energetic. They came on, and two of the lead singers almost never were standing still... they kept running around the stage, etc. After every song, one of the lead singers did the "How is everybody feeling tonight???" type of thing, and the crowd would go wild. After Special Beat played for about 50 mins, Vinx came on. He started with a couple things to get the crowd in a good mood... "I'm gonna sing some *country* songs for you tonight...[singing] Mamas...don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys...Anyway, I here there are a lot of rednecks in the crowd tonight [scattered boos and cheers], here's a song for y'all...[singing]. I'm dreaming of a white girlfriend [uproarious laughter]" Then he went on to describe a song "white people all over the world love, and they don't even know the words". With crowd echo, he sang:
Day-o Day-ay-ay-o Daylight come and me wanna go home I saw mama kissing daddy's banana Kissing his big ol' *brown* banana It was a big ol' BIG ol' brown banana"
To which the crowd nearly fell out of their seats with laughter. After that, Vinx sang some really nice songs, including one I recognized as Temporary Love, and another one that was totally a capello. One voice. I thought it was pretty amazing.
Onto Sting.
Sting came on to 'All This Time', and the whole crowd was immediately on their feet bopping around. Pretty much going crazy. I don't remember the exact song order, but he then went thru extended (but extremely excellent...I have no idea how that guy could say Sting had no energy) versions of 'Why Should I Cry For You?', 'Mad About You', and several cuts from every album he's put out. Like I said, about 38 mins into side one, Sting began BOTN/etc., and I knew I was sunk. After going thru some truly amazing versions of almost everything that's ever made him famous, Vinx came on to help with Every Breath You Take (which I missed a little of the beginning). Another great version - I think this song could easily be considered THE pop ballad of the 80s. After a few more songs, Special Beat came out to help with Message In A Bottle. It was a really fun version, with the chorus being interjected with reggae Special Beat comments ("It was a message in a little bitty bottle yeah", etc.). I think it was after this song that Sting decided to close out the night. The crowd most have reached hearing loss decible level with their cheers (my ears are still ringing), and everybody with a lighter had it out (of course...). My lighter, when I turned it off, nearly burnt my hand just from the heat it was radiating. Sting and his personal crew jumped back out on stage. What did he do for an encore? I was suprised in an extremely cool way...he did "Fragile". Excellent, excellent version. After he finished he gave the "goodnight" speech, and finished that one last note. As soon as he was off the stage, house lights came back on, and then turned off and on really quickly...too bad it was just a mistake by the stage crew. All in all, I think it's the best concert I've ever been to, and the lighting was also incredible. As for the music? The person I ended up going with, who wasn't an extremely big Sting fan, said it was *the* *best* concert music-wise he's been to.
Anyway, like I said, more on the songlist:
