Superbowl - Sun City, South Africa

by author's name unknown on September 26, 2000

After reading all your posts for so long, I finally got to see Sting - twice! He appeared on Saturday (23 Sept) at the Sun City SuperBowl, a smallish venue (capacity 11 000). Hy husband and I had standing-room tickets, and because we got there early were lucky enough to get to the second row. It was great to be close enough to see the sweat and spit. I tried to see the bracelet that Sting wears with his watch, but it was behind the bass all the time, and could only make out that it is two silver rings, with a brass band between them I couldn't see any inscription.

There was no support act, and the show started half an hour late, but then it Rocked ! The band were in high spirits, and seemed to be genuinely having fun. Sting was wearing the grey cargo pants and red tank top, and looked good - white hair and all. Anyone else notice the little zip at the back of the tank top ? Cute! Dominic played like a dream, but looked a bit spaced out. At one point he pointed at someone in the crowd, and tossed something to them. Wonder what it could have been... It wasn't his plectrum - he tossed that later.

The set list seems to have been the same as the Central Park Concert, except that it started with 1000 Years. ie.

  1. A Thousand Years
  2. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free
  3. After the Rain has Fallen
  4. We'll be Together
  5. Perfect Love... gone wrong
  6. All this Time
  7. Seven Days
  8. Fill Her Up
  9. Fields of Gold
  10. Every Little Thing she Does is Magic
  11. Moon over Bourbon Street (No hat, Robin!)
  12. Englishman in New York
  13. Brand New Day
  14. Roxanne
  15. Desert Rose
  16. Bring on the Night / When the World is Running Down
  17. If I ever lose my faith in you
  18. Every Breath you Take
  19. Message in a a Bottle
  20. Fragile

The show was 1 hour, 45 minutes, and I enjoyed every minute of it!

BTW, I found this is the SA press, which I thought was amusing: ' Addressing a packed press conference, Sting said he had adapted to the stress of a super star lifestyle and was no longer concerned with what critics had to say about him. "I used to write back to critics... but I'm too old for that now... you can say what you want." '
