Ed Sullivan Theater - New York, New York, United States [Late Night With David Letterman]

by Brian on October 8, 2000

Oh my God. Went to see Sting and band rehearse for the Letterman show this morning. They ran through Brand New Day about five times. Incredible.

Notes:

The band was bundled up since the Ed Sullivan theater was even colder than usual. The backing singers were hugging themselves while trying to do their moves. Very cute indeed.

Severely edited version, no jamming in between chorus and outro—straight to the point, and only the first set of outro lyrics. By the end, Sting was singing "Same old song" instead of "Brand New Day".

Fascinating to see Sting play the bandleader. During a break, he tightened the outro section with Jason and Kipper. Awesome to hear an instrumental version. Dominic also worked on the harmony parts with the backing vocalists.

Despite someone’s earlier comment, Manu actually does play the drums on this song! He doesn’t kick in until the second verse, but then he throws down some serious four-on-the-floor bass drum. This song will ROCK in concert!!

Towards the end, Sting sang the song at half voice (like the Fortress rehearsal in Bring On The Night) really interesting. He was almost speaking the lyrics instead of singing. Very loose, low and husky.

The rehearsal ended about 12:30, and I went to the outside of the theater hoping to meet the man. The exits are usually mobbed by fans after the actual show taping, but since no one knows when the rehearsals are scheduled, it’s usually pretty empty. I met Dominic who was kind enough to sign my Brand New Day CD (not the jacket). I saw Jason, Kipper and the vocalists (who are in fact the most beautiful women alive **wink**), but was so starstruck from meeting Dominic that I let them walk by. Sting came out a few minutes later, and wondered who the other joker that signed my disc was. He was also nice enough to sign my Soul Cages booklet (personalized!). He let a few fans take some pictures and then announced that he had to go. I didn’t want to be pushy, so I opted not to get any photos. He looked a little annoyed (especially since it was so cold outside…he wanted to get going).

Don’t have access to my normal account, so feel free to post to ISUN if you like. Will send scans of my autographed goodies tomorrow.

The show will be aired in the US tomorrow night.
