Anybody thinking of skipping the "Brand New Day" tour should think again! I just saw Sting for the 3rd time last night and it was in a 2,500 seat venue and WOW what a difference. Sting was speaking to us like we were all his buddies. It wasn't like going to see a "rock star" at a huge venue, it was like being in smoky club, seeing an old friend.
The set was a little different from what I've seen listed. "Heavy Cloud , No Rain" and "I Was Brought To My Senses" were sadly missing. The highlights for me were the newly redesigned "Moon Over Bourbon Street" (Chris Botti played his ass off on this song), "Desert Rose" (with Cheb Mami) and "Perfect Love Gone Wrong" which was a bit different from the recorded version, the third verse modulated to a different key instead of returning to the same key as the first 2, which took the song into different and subsequently BETTER territory than the original.
I have to say my favorite moment of the night was when he came out to do the second encore (Fragile) and this woman down front was waving frantically at Sting, so he asked her what was up. She handed him a bottle with a message in it. He got such a kick out it that he signed the bottle, kissed her, and asked us if we wanted to hear that song. Of course, we said YES!!! So, while the band waited, we got an impromptu solo version of the song on classical guitar. It was easily the BEST version of "Message In A Bottle" I have EVER heard. When the crowd was singing with him, it sent shivers down my spine.
I had an amazing time. I hope all the rest of you get to see Sting in such a wonderful environment. If had the money, I'd be going to see him tonight in Cupertino!!!
BTW - the band was great. Chris Botti and Dom really stood out. And although Manu Katche and Jason Rebello are certainly no slouches, Vinnie Colaiuta and Kenny Kirkland's absences are QUITE noticable. Manu doesn't have Vinnie's drive. Period.
Hey STING!!! Bring back Vinnie!!!!
First last night's set list which includes Message In A Bottle, and Mad About You (the latter at the expense of All This Time - which is shame).
Saw the show in Berkeley last night and really enjoyed it. Similar set list to the 19th except he swapped Mad About You for All This Time and played an acoustic version of Message In A Bottle at the request of a fan who had something shaped like a bottle which he signed right before trying to play Fragile. Very nice perk.
