Nippon Budokan Theatre (Hall) - Tokyo, Japan
by Jeremy on October 30, 2000
Just back from the Tokyo shows, and have to say that for some reason, Sting, Miles or whoever makes these decisions, seems to value the Japanese population over all others. Over the years, we have seen many rare items be released in Japan, but not in America, and not in Europe. Most notably the release of the Ghost in the Machine concert from Gateshead, England. The full show was released on both laser disc and Video, yet the rest of the world gotà. Shafted ? Why am I telling you this ??? read on...
Anyways Tokyo is an amazing place, amazingly expensive more than anything else.
The show:
- 1000 Years - Same as always, although Sting seemed a little bored with it all.
- Set them free - Forever conditioned to believe that this song sucks, we could lose it and be happy with less
- After the Rain - Great version, although Russ seemed to be struggling with the backing vocals due to his concentration on the keyboards
- We'll be together - as normal drab
- Perfect Love...gone wrong - rap was done by some Little Japanese boy who looked like he was about 8 years old
- All this time - Just love this song
- Seven Days - don't go there, although Russ managed, much to his own great delight, to play the mouse running music in the middle
- I'm so happy - Nice to see this added, nice to see anything added really
- Fill Her Up - Love the middle of this, although it misses the Johnny Lang solo a bit
- Ghost story - Evil evil bastards...this means that Sting apparently only remembers the words when he is in Japan, why did we all beg for so long assholes..
- Every little thing she does is Magic - Excellent, although the security seems to scare the hell out of the audience. Not one person stood up until late in the show, and seemed to be very well albeit a tad too well behaved.
- Moon Over Bourbon Street - Tired nowdays, Chris even looked bored
- Tomorrow we'll see - Doms solo from this has been cut again
- Brand New Day - At least the beginning intro thing is back, no longer the Bossa Nova crap that we endured before. But it still sucks
- Roxanne - was good
- Desert Rose - Misses Cheb, but where it merges with Bring on at the end is excellent
- Bring on the night / When the world - well, Russ isn't Jason, but he did try. Russ and Kipper shared the solo, but it really sounded like a keyboard solo of the 80's new wave era as opposed to the Piano variety. Try to
imagine the keyboard solo from Genesis's Follow you follow me
- When we dance - well this was the highlight for me, Only Dom and Sting, at the front of the stage on Stools, lights down, except for spotlights on them. The outro sort of faded into Lose my faith, and remained acoustic
until Dom jumped up in a panic forgetting that he needed the electric for the chorus. Why the hell do we not get this anywhere else..., only played on the last night in Tokyo though, so maybe thats why.
- Lose my faith - as mentioned before
- Every breath you take - was excellent as always, still does the applause meter at the beginning
- Message - He was tantric tonight, no here he comes
- Fragile - Quite nice again, solo a little different, but sounded more like mistakes than changes
No more until. Well not sure really.
Thanks to all who made this possible, you know who you are...
And then I woke up........
English winter....doh
