Grand Cayman Ballroom, Trump Marina - Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States

by Jay Matsueda on November 13, 1999

Overall, the Sting show last night at the Trump Marina Grand Camaan ballroom was a great show.

Here's my detailed view:

The Grand Camaan ballroom holds a mere 1400 people. Every seat was a good one but, since there were so few to fill, ticket prices were unprecedently high. This affected the atmosphere because only rich old people could afford the front $224 seats and they did not offer much outward energy for Sting to work off of.

Their were no new songs in the set list.

'Roxanne' was very unusual. There was a point near the end where it turned into an amorphous and seemingly unintended mess. From the looks on the musicians faces, I think Jason Rebello missed a cue.

"Bring on->When the World" actually kicked ass. I was not exactly pleased when I saw that Sting was going to be doing this on tour again, but I really enjoyed it when it came down to it.

Sting chatted a few moments by explaining that he could hear the audience talking in the front row. He repeated what he had supposedly heard: "I wonder where he got that shirt?" "He was better with the Police." "Can he really have sex for 5 hours?" Sting explained that he's given up tantric sex for trying to get Trudie to stop shopping so much, or something.

Some lame couple brought a sealed letter to Sting that he opened on stage. It was a stack of photos and some kind of interpretation of them. That was annoying. These 2 people somehow wanted to turn the show into their own personal experience, as if they were the only Sting fans in the room. Sting quickly realized that this letter wasn't something he could use to enhance the enjoyment of everyone else and moved on.

Anyway, the rest of the show rocked and it was what I needed to start enjoying the new album more. Hearing the new songs live, that is.

Peace.

Hello there. My wife and I saw Sting at the Trump Marina in Atlantic City last night. It was our first time seeing him except for when he did 2 songs at the Net Aid concert in Giants Stadium a few weeks back.

The venue was small...The Grand Cayman Ballroom held maybe 1500 people (just an estimate). First MeShell NdegeOcello came out with her 5-piece backup and did a solid 25 minute set. Although she sounded good, it was clear that we were there to see Sting.

Sting played a 1 hour 40 minute set, including the 2 encores. He opened with A Thousand Years, and proceeded to do most of the stuff from Brand New Day. Mixed in was old favorites like All This Time, Englishman in NY, and ...Set Them Free. Encores consisted of wonderful versions of Roxanne, Message in a Bottle and Fragile.

Sting was full of personality and clearly enjoyed playing a small room for once. His voice was in top shape and the band rocked. Nice job by the trumpet player and "Three"--his backup gals.

The only thing my wife and I agreed on was the general level of rudeness displayed by the audience. Usually at a venue that small, people are generally more quiet and still than they would be at an arena. But not here. The people in the audience were constantly bustling about, talking loudly, coming in and out of the theatre numerous times, getting yelled at by security for taking pictures and then taking still MORE pictures. I did, however, notice a direct correlation between offensive behavior and alcoholic beverages in hand. This was actually a very disturbing part of the show because most of the people in question were right in my line of sight.

Musically, Sting is in great shape right now. Great show, and well worth the expensive ticket price. Enjoy the show if you're going to see him. You'll have a great time.

Please excuse the dribbling cos I have just had a religious experience. The wife and i decided to book in advance a room for the weekend in the Trump Marina as a second honeymoon. $170 a night and I'm afraid the rooms were not worth it. We took advantage of being in the venue by going to the Grand Cayman ballroom to check out the people setting up everything. I had visions of Sting turning into Elvis when I heard he was doing a gig in a ballroom. Expected to see tables with flowers and candles everywhere. Classy venue but still not worth our $170 ticket prices. The merchandise however made me gag. $27 for t shirts is the going rate so musn't grumble but $27 for a b/ball hat, $12 for a key ring/badge , $100 for a hooded fleece top and a mind boggling $165 for a Sting jacket. To top it all off there was no souvenir programmes..are there any tour programmes?

The concert itself was as usual brilliant. The set list was more or less the same as previous shows on the tour so won't repeat it as this e mail is dragging its heals!!! I have to agree with a previous e mail touching on the subject of Sting perhaps injecting some different police songs into the set. While they are obviously great I was a bit disappointed not to be "surprised" by new interpretations of old Police or even Sting classics.

Believe it or not I was a nervous teenager before the gig and as happy as a pig in s**t afterwards so excuse me if I sound too negative but I had to get a few things off my chest!

Sorry it took so long for me to give *my* review of the Nov. 13th concert. Here's my take on the show:

This was my first ever Sting concert. I turned 20 last month so this was my present. And it was the best present I could have ever received.

When we got to the Trump Marina our seats got screwed up. When I called and ordered tickets I asked about handicapped seating because my mother is in a wheelchair. Well the seats that they gave us had a couple steps that you had to go up so the guy who was leading us to our seats upgraded us from Section H ($112) to Section C (I think those tix would've cost $160 each). Six rows back from the stage, on the right hand side. It was awesome. And my mom couldn't see a damn thing when everybody stood up, so she kinda edged her way closer to the stage. She said she could see better then. I doubt if I'll/we will ever be that close to Sting again!!

Me'shell N'degewhatever was the opening act. Personally I didn't care for her. However I did feel sorry for her because after her set she was kinda off to the right waiting to see if there was going to be an encore and nobody wanted to hear any more from her. She was also packing up her own equipment. I felt bad...but anyway...

When Sting came out I thought I would die!!! He looks so good in person!!!!!!!!! So much sexier (and I didn't think that would be possible)!!!! He was wearing a leathery-type shirt and his cargo pants(I thought he looked great in them!) Dominic looked so good too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay here's the set list, not necessarily in order and I might've forgot a song or 2 but here it is:

  1. A Thousand Years (it gave me chills! This is my fav. from BND!)
  2. Set Them Free
  3. After The Rain Has Fallen
  4. We'll Be Together
  5. All This Time
  6. Mad About You
  7. Seven Days
  8. Every Little Thing She Does is Magic
  9. Fields of Gold
  10. Perfect Love Gone Wrong (Manu Katche did the French Rap)
  11. Tomorrow We'll See
  12. Moon over Bourbon Street (I loved this one! With the deep voice and sexy hat!!)
  13. Brand New Day
  14. Roxanne
  15. Fill Her Up
  16. Desert Rose (No Cheb Mami:)
  17. Bring On The Night/WTWIRDYMTBOWSA (jam)

First Encore:

  1. Faith
  2. EBYT

Second Encore:

  1. Message in a Bottle (Acoustic)
  2. Fragile

A couple of highlights during the show (Sting made the Tantric sex/shopping joke again. A women handed Sting an envelope. Sting jokingly said "I wonder what it could be? A summons?lol, and inside it was a letter w/pictures of portraitss that she painted. She was inspired by his music. He said "that's sweet" after he read it. And the whole Crowd awwwwwwwwed. Then it got quiet and I screamed at the top of my lungs "Sting I love You!" I know he heard me. Also another humorous portion came from a few guys that were sitting near me. . After Seven Days were over, and Sting started talking the guys just kept on singing "Monday I could wait till Tuesday. . .etc" They sounded pretty good.

This concert was the best experience of my life!!! I tried several attempts to get backstage. I tried several times with the line "My mother is in a wheelchair and she is a huge fan of Stings. She'd love to meet him. Is there any way?" No luck. Speaking of backstage, would somebody please tell me how you get backstage passes????!!?? Do you have to know 'somebody'? But anyway...

Wonderful experience!! Can't wait to go again!! Didn't somebody on this list mention Sting was touring ampitheaters this summer? God I hope so because I'm going through major Sting concert withdrawl.. . .I bought a poster and one of those awesome mugs. . .i wanted a tote bag. Those things looked neat. I could kill myself for not picking one of them up...

Sorry so long!!!! I guess I was rambling!!!
