E.J. Thomas Hall - Akron, Ohio, New York, United States

by Jason on December 1, 1999

The Sting concert here in Akron last night was FANTASTIC--well worth the $85.00.

Sting was really funny and had the crowd rolling with laughter.

First he tells us this story: "You know, Thanksgiving is an odd concept to an englishman....anyway, I live in New York city on the Macy's parade route. I was dreaming about a huge Garfield balloon floating by and then when I woke up and went to my window (on Thanksgiving morning) there was a big F***ing Garfield floating by. Across the street was a photographer from the NY Post who snapped a picture of me wondering where the Garfield came from."

Then later in the show, he starts talking to the people in the front row, something about seeing him up close. He says, "Yeah, I guess you wonder if I can really go for 5 hours (CROWD ROARS)--well, I have given up Tantric Sex, I am trying to get my wife into Tantric shopping...that's where you go shopping for 5 hours and don't buy anything..."

The show was great, Sting is the MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those who are interested...Sting's concert last night in Akron, OH was great.

Sting was wearing a pair of dark green/slate cargo pants, a gray/silerish puffy looking jacket with a logo on it (Northface???), and shoes that looked brown with what looked like paint stains on them. His voice was in top form.

Sorry for the delay in the review. I wanted to put it up on the web site I was putting together, but I decided not to at this point. I hope by the end of today, my web site will be ready for everyone to see. Very simple, small site. I've decided to add a couple more things, like a trade page. I will post to the lists when it is ready. READ ON!!

Well, what can I say!! My first Sting concert was just the best experience ever!! When the tickets went on sale, I had decided that they were too much money. With Christmas coming up, I really need to watch those pennies!! Then these tickets came up on eBay and I just had to grab them. I was able to get them about $30 less than what the lady had paid for them. So, I just had to go!! My seats were in the last row. That was disappointing. But, I had to be there!! This concert was also 2 hours away from my house. That is nothing unusual for me to travel to shows. I will be able to see Sting in my backyard (city) this coming summer. YEAH!!!

OK, on with the review. My seats weren't great, but I could see. I wish I had taken my binoculars. My zoom camera did OK. The pictures are grainy, but I tried to fix them on my photo program. I was up very high. Even above the speakers!! So, the pictures show the stage from above view point, which I thought was very cool!! Watching the workers put the stage together is always fun for me. I didn't realize that carpet like material is laid out on the floor. For Sting and Dominic. Then the platforms have this same material on them. The stage setup is very cool!! I loved it!! The platform behind Sting was used by everyone. Dominic, Chris and Sting. I wish I would have written down the set list, but I think someone has already posted it. Pretty much the same as the other shows. I didn't think I would like Thousand Years to start out with. I was wrong!! Very cool song to start with. Manu came down and drummed on a little stand up kit and then hit the front stage for the rap. Scream continued to circle him and then headed up to their platform. Very cool!! Manu did an excellent job. I am a Vinnie lover. But, Manu did an overall excellent job. Sting did the same, Tantric sex, shopping and parade stories. I thought it was funny, even though I knew it was coming. Most people didn't know it was coming. Everyone laughed very hard about these stories. He did tell the people down front he could hear what they say, so watch out. Someone yelled "Little Wing" and Dom started in with it. Sting at this point said, "Don't get him started!!" Very cool!! I miss a Hendrix song in the set list. Bring on "Purple Haze!!" Sting said the last time he played in Akron, Ohio was in 1978. He laughed when he said it!! You see, Akron is a very small town. The one good thing about being in the last row, I stood up the whole time!! Luckily, the girl beside me wanted to stand up too!! Party on!! LOL!! The lighting is the best I have ever seen. And I've seen ALOT of bands!! The band, on the whole, is really well put together. Dominic, my favorite ALWAYS, was excellent. I wish I could play guitar like that. I try!! His favorite spot is in front of his microphone, at the edge of the stage. Guitar God!! He is playing Fender Strats now. That thrills me to death. They are my favorite guitars. Chris did great. I like him better than I thought. It almost looks like he cut his hair too. Did anyone else notice? I did notice he left the stage during some songs. Now Jason!! He is great!! I always loved Kenny and David, but Jason brings an excitement to this band. Too bad, he is stuck behind that keyboard!! He needs one of those portable keyboards you can play with a strap, like a guitar. Kipper was pretty good too. He got the audience to clap quite a few times. Get us going!! Now for Scream. I'm not too thrilled with these ladies. Actually, I could sing better!! Just kidding!! I wish!!

The non show highlight for me was getting Dominic's new CD, Second Nature. I have looked for it for a solid straight month. The guy who was selling the merchandise was British. I think he may have been a little surprised that I wanted to buy it. I got the black, BND t-shirt with the tour dates on them. Money is tight right now, so that is all I bought. I think this venue holds 1600-1700 people. I think everyone made it!! Sold out pretty quickly. I hope I am first row next summer. There just isn't any better place to be!! Between Sting and Dominic. I would just die.

I was also at this concert, and i must say that i was let down by sting. don't get me wrong, i love the man as much as i love the police. however, being a minority at age 17 among other fans of sting and the police might have had something to do with it. this was the first time i have ever seen him live and i was looking forward to it since i heard he was coming to akron. first off, i paid $85 for my ticket. for that price, i should have been A LOT closer than i actually was considering there was absolutely no difference in price between where i was and the floor level. i had to view almost the entire show through my binoculars which made me feel that i wasn't really watching him live. my distance made me feel just like i was sitting home watching him on tv again. another thing i had a problem with was the people in the first row. they stood ONCE during the entire concert and obviously weren't as big of fans as some of the rest. i just feel this is highly unfair. while i was in the hallway, i also overheard a conversation between two women who were discussing how "sting JUST broke up with the police a few years ago and how sad it was". this made me livid considering this was such a small venue and they probably had better seats than i did. then there was the merchandise. $100 for a sweatshirt? $40 for a t-shirt? please, spare me. aren't these people rich enough without having to suck us dry? sting also said the same exact things he's been saying at previous concerts and talk shows which made me feel very cheated out of a unique show considering the set list was also the same. don't get me wrong, this was the best i have ever heard him live considering the police/other sting concerts/talk shows i have seen. i just felt a little cheated, that's all.

I went to the FABULOUS Sting concert, and was lucky enough to sit very close to the front...about twenty seats back. It was the most intimate setting for a concert, and it was my FAVORITE concert I have ever been to, and I have been to the best!!!

I love his music, and it was simply energizing to BE there with his presence!!!! I also do Yoga, and thought his energy was incredible! The man I was dating, at the time, shelled out $200.00 for the tickets, and they were worth every penny. I almost went alone, and would have had more fun, actually!

Can you help me? WHO was the opening act for Sting? I found her music to be very cool, and want to possess it! Please send any info to...cmacika@aol.com I would really apprecialt any information. Thanks!!!
