Chicago Theater - Chicago, Illinois, United States

by Samit G. Choudhuri on December 8, 1999

Wow, what a great show this was. I had great seats and even taped the show. This is my first home recording, too. It came out way too loud, but at least it's mine to cherish. I had a wonderful time at the show and hung out in the alley by the side of the theatre and met Jules and James. Both very cool individuals and Sting fans. Jules, Narendra (my old roommate from college), and I hung out under an umbrella as the day rained away. We waited from 3pm until about 7:55pm and left. Jules went to change and I had to go in. I've had the flu and was fading fast. It was a pity we left, because Sting came by ten minutes later and signed autographs, took photos, and so on. C'est la vie. I was bummed, but to be honest, was feeling much to sick to really care too much at the time. I'm sure it'll be otherwise when I'm feeling better. Anyway, I understand that he was charming and very pleasant.

Sting came onstage at about 9pm and performed pretty much all the songs that have been posted in previous posts from the past few weeks. He sang All This Time, but didn't do Mad About You and Ghost Story, which is a pity. I have to say that this show now ranks as my best-ever concert experience. I've probably been to a 100+ concerts (this was my eigth Sting show, but the first time I've been second row center). I was close enough to trip him up (which I of course would never do.

People started standing with Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic and within the next two songs the whole main floor was standing (from what I could see looking back) at the crowd. Later, I noticed the whole balcony standing, too (though that was during the encores). It was just an amazing sight. A few times I heard the reverb from peoples singing back to Sting during Roxanne, Englishman In New York, and Message In A Bottle. I think the audience was pretty terrific and I'm glad we all got to stand up to dance and cheer.

After the show, the side stage door was packed with people. I went out there for a bit, but was just feeling like passing out. My buddy, who is a doctor, insisted (correctly) that I go back to the hotel and crash, so I got on a cab and was passed out by midnight. I think the show lasted about 100 minutes.

Sting did crack the same jokes he has at other shows, but to be honest, I just didn't care. I'd never heard them before and they were funny. He also commented on how beautiful and intimate the Chicago Theatre was. He wasn't kidding. It really was a beautiful venue.

Sting's voice was in the best I've ever heard and he was energetic as hell. The supporting band did an awesome job. Jason Robello rocked out in When The World Is Coming Down (wow!) and Chris Botti's trumpeting was a superb touch to many a tune. Manu did well during his rap of Perfect Love...Gone Wrong. The Screem singers were good looking, but I don't think added much more than eye candy (IMHO). I did enjoy their presence on the stage though.

If you get a chance, check out this tour. I can't imagine any Sting fan regretting it. Hey Jules, it was great meeting and talking with you. I'm sorry I was such a party pooper and left early, but I was about to keel over by the night's end. Stay in touch. It was a pleasure meeting you Sting fans that went to see the show in Chicago!

As a historical rundown, I've seen Sting once on "...Nothing Like The Sun," thrice on "The Soul Cages," once on "Ten Summoner's Tales," twice on "Mercury Falling," and now once on "Brand New Day." I'd love to see him again when he tours the bigger venues in the USA during summer/fall 2000.
