Happy New Year.
We just got back from the last European Sting show in Reims, France. Great show. The band was in excellent form and very relaxed. Among others, I think songs like "Jeremiah Blues" and "Driven to Tears" are always fantastic live.
I don't understand the comment someone made about Sting's recent songs having poor rhythm. Without knowing the person who said this, my immediate reaction is that this person doesn't appreciate the mechanics of music. My God, if Sting doesn't understand rhythm, heaven help us all. (No. I'm not religious.) Just listen to "Mad About You" or "Jeremiah" or "History Will Teach Us Nothing." In fact, the varied rhythms are one of the things I enjoy most in Sting's music. Like I think someone else said, Sting doesn't stamp out the standard 12-bar blues or repeat the same four guitar chords like the Stones have come to rely on. (Don't get me wrong. I actually enjoy the Stones. I just think they are on a different plane musically.) You may not like all of Sting's songs, but I do think that this is an unqualified statement.
Just my two cents.
