Been an interesting few days as of late...some new things. Army Run on Okinawa was Friday...lovely. Running in formation for my second time since coming to Okinawa, singing cadences, trying to not step all over/trip over the guy in front of me elbow/get elbowed by the man beside me, and decipher whatever it is the cadence caller is saying...all while running at a snail's friggin pace so that my knees hurt and my ankles creak afterwards. Get done and get drenched by a sudden sqwall while standing there for the wrap up. Speaking of the sqwall...it was so etheral. We were all standing on Renegade DZ (at Torii Beach) and you could see this huge wall of mist just offshore, creeping towards us slowly but surely. Oh I almost forgot to mention that the "motivational music" they played before we started running (which was about an hour to an hour and a half, btw...something that really gave us all from 1/1 a case of the ass) was an entire CD by the backstreet boys!?!?! What the FUCK!! Other than waking me up in a cold sweat, it did nothing! productive for me. Went bowling during lunch with the office---they've been bugging me all week to go with them, but either I had something I wanted/needed to do, or, as my normal introvert/loner self does, simply wanted that hour and a half to myself...I actually didn't do too bad after I got through a few pretty rough frames... D'Von said it today--the reason we get along so well is we're both such recluses generally...though I would have to say he is not as bad as me at least. I feel comfortable saying that I've gotten better over the years however... growing up perhaps? Shuffling through that process most normal people get in high school or college perhaps? That knowing many people and actually having to decide who to hang out with/scene to visit. Is it true? could it be said that I have made friends...emphasis on the "s"? Perhaps. So let's see...there's D, who I normally venture out into the local scene; Wilson and Steve, who I regularly go diving with, not to mention all the one off diving buddies; Nicholas and El from work who I've only actually gone out with once but are OK chaps and keep asking me to go back out with them again, and now the local 1st of the 1st rock band Chuck Wow who I finally went to see and hung out with at the Hideaway--this little underground (literally) concrete slabbed, dimly lit, wonderfully fresh and invigorating heavy metal/punk club...SO nice to see/hear some decent live music over here on the island...and I got awfully tore up cuz I didn't have anything to eat for dinner--had a blast. :) Didn't plan on drinking much last night--I had really just wanted to go, roll some tape on the boys, and come home to rest up for guard duty today...well being the lush I am, all it took was the suggestion of an idea the drummer gave me, to just catch a cab...well...yeah. Had a bit of a hang over this morning. Damn cabbie didn't want to take me on base to my barraks and just left me at the gate. 2 km walks at 0030, drunk of your arse and stumbling...is NOT fun. At least it's here in Okinawa so the weather was still warm (um yeah...still wearing shorts here btw). Bout halfway I had to stop in a little grassy field and...yeah well. Been a while since I yaked...especially out of the confines of my own porcelain goddess. D is giving me a lift tomorrow to go pick up my ride. I gotta go back to Kadena and get my mob chopped anyway so it works out. (Maybe there really IS some sort of "masterplan"? no?) Guard Duty...yeah. tons of fun. This old couple coming in for the Army/Navy game gave me and my private a plate of these brownie/rice crispee things and some other munchies to pass out to friends, not to mention breakfast sandwhichs from another soldier who'd made a food run for HIS other co-workers...cool guy that guy! Cool folks those folks! Got to chatting with the private and also the MP private who came up to help check IDs cuz he was bored...laughed a good bit and the time went by. Army/Navy game...army won! Go army! Beat Navy! wahoo! Only caught the second half, but, my overall impressions: 1) I think it must be a penalty to NOT get a flag on each and every play. 2) the refs needed megaphones--I don't watch enough football to know all the hand signals...I doubt I am alone in that 3) The timekeeper was on crack-- left the clock rolling after a touchdown/extra point attempt/regrouping for kickoff/return of kickoff 3 min stint or so, AND skipping the 2 min warning at the end 4) the way kicks were done was retarded--no rushing the kicker? 5) Army won in a true do or die situation! GO army! beat Navy! (that with a twinge of sarcasm...i mean...flag football? please) D and I went down to Kokusai street again this night...he was finally meeting this local girl he'd met online (i know, don't laugh...she was actually quite cute). He was assuming she would bring a friend and it'd be pertinent for him to bring one as well. She of course, showed up alone so I spent quite some time wandering off on my own and staying well back from them after rejoining at Tower Records where I finally found this CD...Hadn't thought to get it in the states and it has been all but impossible to find over here for some strange reason... As much as I was kind of annoyed that there was no "friend"...I in a way was just as happy. Don't really know if I was up to meeting a girl tonight...still a little in that "blah" feeling from last night/this morning. Yet, at the same time...it was really really wonderful to see D and this girl meeting--from what I saw they seemed to really hit it off and it just kind of gave me hope on the whole relationship debaucle. I smile thinking about the two of them walking along together. Oh and one last thing...isn't it absolutely MADDENING to get a personalized email from some company or something and you just want to reply and say thank you but you know the company gets so much email they might be happier if you just left it as is? But you're not sure? And the fact you got a hand typed response and not some form letter is really quite appreciated? Grrrrrrrr! current mood: good
