Hello italian fans club!
Last concert for my friends and me in 98, we no longer will see them before several months, but a huge surprise waits us after the show!
This evening, the framework is superb, to the edge of the "Méditérannée" (Six Fours t Le Brusc) with palm trees, and Crickets: the landscape is idyllic.This open-air concert to gather 3000 to 3500 people. Good audience! The place is well filled. A lot real fans have displaced and we have met notably Joan Subiros of the site of Catalonia:"Ghostdancing" and Joan Romero, of the site "Sparkle in in the web", with their friends. Hot atmosphere from the beginning of the Gig, (that I have also filmed). The Band is in big forms this evening! And especially Jim: it was disappoint to Bagnols there are 4 days (just tired ,this day there?), but this evening it has found its legendary energy and seems best mood, dressed while white, its performance was excellent!
10H00 PM, "War babies" intro begins, the band on the stage: Jim shouts again (as a ritual now during French dates), "Ca va les champions du monde!!!")The hysteria is to its maximum. We have had straight this time to a complete concert with high quality sound and an efficient light show.

During "Waterfront '98", Jim Kerr harangues the crowd: "World champion! Vive la France, Zizou, Zizou ( French player football, Zinédine Zidane), a lot flags "SMINDS" shake and the human tide stirs as to the most beautiful day! Our Catalan friends are not the last to shake. In summary , this concert is well best that to "Bagnols". Great atmosphere and great Minds live performance. The night to the edge of the sea has been beautiful this evening!
After the show, Big surprise: We have been able to enter backstage, with some Catalan fans, Jim was there, in fine of discussion with a fan, we approach, he is available: Tired by the gigt but he is ready for discuss with us! Great Man, real gentleman, truly close to its fans! Photographs, autographs, we congratulate Jim, for an excellent gig. I speak it personally some instant, sites internet dedicated to SMINDS, that he appreciates truly, Football. etc. he must be going But to the same moment, it is Charlie that we rejoined, another great moment: "Photographs of family", some exchanged words, autographs and it is the moment to leave Jim and Charlie: See you next tour!. Precious seconds that we never will forget! (Many thanks Jim and Charlie) An ideal conclusion for concert '98.

Hi Luca,
I was at both the Dublin gigs and the second night, last Tuesday was much much better then the first. They played pretty much the same set bar they played a vintage "Love Song" instead of " Tears of a Guy" which was not to hot on the previous evening. New Gold Dream was a killer and the opener "War Babies" kicked ass and was a lot better than the first night. By all accounts the second night was much tighter and all around better.
All in all they were really brilliant and finally "Belfast Child" brought most of us too tears.. it was a lot cooler too.

Saw SM last night in Dublin's Olympia Theatre.
Great Gig - all the old favourites inc Don't You, Alive & Kicking, Waterfront were played. Best part for me was Big Sleep and New Gold Dream.
Started with War Babies and also played Hypnotised, She's a River, Glitterball, Tears of a Guy (still don't like that song). Superman v Supersoul sounded pretty good. Atmosphere was brilliant with the crowd needing no encouragement to sing along especially to Don't You , and Alive & Kicking. Finished off with Belfast Child (I think).
For those that don't know the Olympia - It's an old fashioned intimate theatre which is great to see a big band in. Jim said, (with one eye a group of kids in the theatre boxes his son and other S Minds' children I assume) that it was a night for Family, friends and fans...
Great gig - hot and sweaty - only complaint was that the sound was a bit dodgy !

Se a Biella è stato un bel concerto, a Bologna c'è stato un GRAN concerto, una sera di quelle che penso anche la band si ricorderà per un po': Jim ha più volte ringraziato il pubblico e URLATO i versi più coinvolgenti. Piazza Maggiore era stracolma e per uscirne ci ho messo un quarto d'ora; non so dire quante persone ci fossero ma credo che si siano superate le 10.000. La tracklist è stata la stessa di Biella (e credo degli altri concerti italiani) eccetto Thirty frames a second che non è stata suonata; il concerto è esploso (boato della folla) soprattutto sulle note di apertura di New Gold Dream e dopo è scattata quella magia che contraddistingue i loro concerti.Non dico che la prima parte fosse fiacca,anzi,ma una cosa è vedere la gente che ascolta i SM e applaude la fine di ogni canzone,una cosa è saltare ed applaudire e cantare insieme a chi ti circonda per un'ora,interrompendoti solo per commuoverti alla passione con cui Jim canta Belfast Child!!!
Una curiosità: si è spesso visto aggirarsi per il palco un tizio con una piccola telecamera... che ci stiano preparando qualche sorpresa?

A mio giudizio il concerto di Biella è stato ENTUSIASMANTE!!!
I Simple Minds hanno suonato dentro lo stadio (e non fuori, nè al Palasport come si diceva) davanti a circa 3500 persone (stima mia e di un mio amico che dovrebbe essere abbastanza imparziale...) la stessa tracklist di Pesaro:

Il concerto si è infiammato soprattutto dopo She's a river e Jim si è impegnato alla morte per coinvolgere il pubblico e creare atmosfere da brividi (Belfast child)...e ci è riuscito in pieno!!!
Piacevoli sorprese sono state Tears of a Guy e New Gold Dream, mentre mi hanno un po' deluso Superman vs. Supersoul e Warbabies.

The concert of the Minds in Muenster on sunday was a big success.
Although they played their "small" festival-set (14 Songs, 1.20 h) which was the same as in Karlshamn on Friday, the crowd went crazy; especially the older songs "hit" the people. The songs sounded like the versions they played during the last summer tour; Belfast Child and NGD were performed in the original versions.
The band itself was very relaxed. When Jim introduced the band, he mentioned hisself with the words: "And my name is Popeye!" Unfortunately the festival wasn't sold out. One of the reasons is the bad and unprofessional promotion of the local agency. Approx. 6500 people joined the festival.

Hi all,
A quick review of the Munster Peace festival concert of yesterday which started at 7:30 am. It rained cats and dogs when we arrived in Munster at 14:30. But we survived the first 2.5 hours standing at the gate. One thing to remember: always bring your festival survival kit with you: "umbrella, plastic bag to sit, money, your ticket and a good mood".... And we were standing at the front in the middle of the stage.
The first band (I don't remember the name since we don't like reggae) played from 17:30 till 18:00. After that, the Dalai Lama from Tibet appeared on stage (let's say the pope of the Buddhists religion) including an army of security people. I never saw him before, but he's quite funny and was able to get the attention of the audience for 30 minutes. Detail: his English speech was translated by a German guy although the majority of the audience understood English pretty well :)))). Good old Bob Geldof plus band played for about 1.5 hours until 20:31. Not bad at all, but to much of the same.
As on previous gigs this year, the intro of the extended War Babies remix announced Simple Minds at 21:00...a great way to start the show!

This show was better than the CyberTheatre one on May 26....more accurate and relaxed and....Jim was singing great! His first words "Let me see your hands" (we've heard that before.....), he had a little "Amaretto" chat with one of us during the show ...they were in good mood and that could be heard.
The day ended after 22 hours in bed at 04:45...I doubt if my boss likes me today :))), but that's not important.....I told him before.

Charlie: thx for the laugh after the show....we hope that Scotland will beat Brazil during the World cup :))))

`Milano (2/6/98) e Pesaro (30/5/98)`

sono tornata mercoledì dopo avere assistito ai concerti di Pesaro e Milano. Biella è stato rimandato all'8 perchè la pioggia aveva reso inagibile il campo le previsioni sono brutte, comunque sciopero dei treni permettendo ci andrò.
Pesaro e Assago: pubblico 7000 p.circa. Direi concerti di rodaggio, imperfetti, con stonature ma molto caldi, intensi. La folla era eccitatissima e la band piena di energia, per niente preoccupata dell'esito dell'album e delle prevendite.
Concerto tirato e bello lungo, praticamente due ore, bellissima scaletta:

Questa scaletta non è in ordine.
Queste sono impressioni molto a caldo devo ascoltare i bootlegs, ma mi sembrava che l'acustica di entrambi i palace non aiutassero, in particolare SUPERMAN e TEARS mi sembravano penalizzate ma parevano anche arrangiate in maniera non adatta per un live. Taylor mi sembrava particolarmente incolore, meglio nel 97, Charlie non saprei, Derek , Mel e Jim erano fantastici.
Supporters: la band di Valerio Jovine e un'altra band italiana, buoni ma nessuno aveva la pazienza di ascoltarli, erano già le 21 passate, i Minds hanno iniziato verso le 22.
Niente Catherine Wheel: voci maligne dicevano che non li supportano più perchè hanno venduto più di loro e sono attualmente in tour per conto proprio. Stringiamoci comunque intorno ai nostri amici in difficoltà.
Sono riuscita a farmi i due backstage grazie a Stan, una bellissima soddisfazione, ho cercato di portare dentro qualche socio, sono riuscita solo con la Persichetti, spero di rimediare a Bassano, sì Enrico spero proprio di venire! Concludo con una frase di Shaun che va a pennello: "non vendono più come una volta, ma riescono ancora a trascinare le folle (anche se minori), dico io" e a regalarci delle serate brillanti.
Roll on the next tour.

Sono rimasto molto colpito dalla poca gente (circa 3000 persone) che, considerando l'assenza di 3 anni da un concerto legato all'uscita di un nuovo album, mi lascia molto perplesso. Probabilmente i Simple Minds hanno ormai una schiera di fedelissimi cresciuti con loro negli anni '80 e la loro musica non cattura le nuove generazioni. Basti pensare che al Forum c'erano parecchie persone sui trenta, e molto poche sui venti.
Riguardo al concerto, con malinquore devo ammettere che anche Jim Kerr comincia a sentire il peso degli anni, e sia la sua voce, che le sue acrobazie sul palco, non sono piu' quelle di una volta. Rimane il fatto che il suo carisma e l'energia che trasmette nei concerti è ancora tanta, e alcuni cavalli di battaglia quali "Waterfront", "Don't you", "Someone Somewhere...." e "Alive & Kicking" riescono ancora dopo tanti anni a far scaldare le mani al pubblico. La lieta sorpesa è stata che dopo tanti anni hanno eseguito una delle più amate canzoni dai fans, quella "New gold dream" che ritengo sia stata una tappa fondamentale della carriera di Jim e soci. E stato un piacere risentire pezzi d'annata quali "Up on the catwalk" e "Thirty frames a seconds", peccato solo che del nuovo album, che includo già tra i loro migliori lavori, abbiano cantato solamente 4 pezzi, ignorando le fantastiche melodie di "If I had wings" e il ritmo travolgente di "Killing Andy Warhol".

Innanzitutto ti posso dire che il concerto di Milano nonostante il pubblico piu' numeroso (penso intorno ai 5-6mila persone) secondo me e' stato un po' meno carico ed esplosivo rispetto a Pesaro. Forse saro' un po' critico ma mezzo voto in meno lo ha dimostrato.Pero' l' importante di tutto (scusa la presunzione)e' che il concerto e' andato a meraviglia in quanto anche stavolta ho centrato un' altra impresa cioe' registrare con la telecamera tutto il concerto ok,ma addirittura entrare nei camerini e filmarli quando sono in relax con i fans stavolta e' proprio il massimo.Ho pensato che avrei avuto dei casini con il loro manager e con Jim e compagni,oppure prendere un sacco di botte,ma invece loro si sono dimostrati incredibilmente menefreghisti e scazzati nello stesso tempo,tanto che a loro piaceva l'idea di farsi riprendere.Comunque un'altra serata da immortalare e da scrivere nel calendario.

Al momento dato che sono in tour (domani mattina parto per Milano) posso dirti riguardo a Pesaro che e' stato un concerto bellissimo molto energico ed intimo (per i veri e vecchi amatori) e per di piu' che positivo in quanto nonostante il palco grezzo come il '97 senza effetti ne' maxischermi e senza un notevole pubblico (c'erano al massimo tremila persone) i mitici Simple Minds mi hanno fatto veramente scatenare e nello stesso tempo rabbrividire come l'anno scorso nel sentire vecchie canzoni.Non mi esprimo per il giudizio sull' incredibile e spettacolare versione di "Colours fly and Catherine Wheel".INDIMENTICABILE.
Da BRIVIDO le ormai leggendarie "New Gold Dream" e la nuova versione riarrangiata di "Waterfront".
Il resto alla prossima volta. Per ora e' tutto. Ciao Luca ci sentiamo dopo Milano.

'This was probably the most relaxed Simple Minds live performance I have ever witnessed, and I certainly don't mean that in a bad way, I think the band were better for probably better for it.
I along with many other people was expecting probably a 60 minute long setlist at the most like the last Cybercast, but was quite surprised when the show ran to around 2 hours.
The band played the following songs:
* War Babies,
* Up On The Catwalk
* Thirty Frames A Second
* Colours Fly & Catherine Wheel (!) - Jim forgot his lines
* She's A River
* See The Lights
* Glitterball
* Tears Of A Guy
* Superman vs Supersoul (!) - sounds great live
* New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84) - quite a short version, but with an excellent introduction
* Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)
* Big Sleep
* Hypnotised
* Let There Be Love (Derek sounded particularly good)
* Waterfront (opened with samples from the recent remix, Jim also mentioning various places where people would be watching the show from before the song, and quite bizarrely throughout the song which was also quite funny)
* Love Song
* Alive & Kicking
* Belfast Child
* Don't You (Forget About Me)
All in all a pretty good show, hopefully the band will manage to get a couple more tracks from Neapolis rehearsed before they go on tour. The older tracks sounded great, especially Colours Fly, which was a joy to hear live again.
My only criticisms would be that the technology used for these cybercasts is still in its early days yet, I lost my connection some 4 or 5 times throughout the show (but at least managed to access it unlike many others).
However, things are looking good as the technology is improving all the time, and in a couple of years, when issues such as bandwidth are resolved, these cybercasts could be something really special.'

Hi all,
A quick review of the CyberTheatre concert.
The band: Jim was in good shape (he forgot his lines only a few times) and talked a lot with the audience, Charlie screwed up Big Sleep (his yellow guiter was totally detuned with Derek's bass), Mark was superb and Mel needed a few songs to get up to speed. Derek: no words needed....very relaxed and good. Anyway, this concert was much better than the one on February 25.
The arrangements of the songs have been changed, they sound better. My favourite song was "Up on the catwalk"...brilliant.
This was the longest set list of this year (2 hours), they will play a subset of it on the summer festivals. Simple Minds sound at least as good as during the 1997 performances...and these were rated good!
Let's hope they will continue with their plans to release another Live cd.....

From: Wouter Desmet w.desmet@tornado.be Subject: Jim & Charlie in Antwerp Hi ! I went to the Proms the 2nd of November in Antwerp, together with Kurt Meuleman a.o. (- hello Kurt, I'm back on the list ! -). I enjoyed most of the show, but was shocked at seeing Debbie Harry (she sounds still great, though :-) ): she looks really silly and washed out these days and dresses like Absolutely Fabulous' Edina... The highlights of the Proms for me were Jo Lemaire's marvellous version of Edith Piaf's "Je ne regrette rien" and the amazing version of "Belfast Child" the Minds played. This song never sounded so good to me. I really liked the "uptempo" version they played at Loreley a lot, but the Proms' orchestral version really beats everything. For the first time in years, Belfast Child gave me goose-flesh and made all my body-hair stand up ! A lot of SM fans commented that they saw SM's appearance at the Proms as a sell-out, and I rather shared this point of view, until I saw the show. It's a fact they only play 4 of their greatest hits, and I would have preferred an orchestral version of e.g. "Street Hassle", but then the Proms attract a lot of people that aren't fans of the top-act. By the way, Jim & Charlie really gave the impression that they fully enjoyed playing those 4 songs for 20000 people and they do know how to entertain a large crowd. Like Kurt wrote, there were a lot of problems with Charlie's guitar during the first song (A&K), but Charlie's famous smile didn't disappear from his face. Furthermore, SM did include a surprise in the set: as an intro to "Don't you", the orchestra played a bit of "EAST AT EASTER" ! I recognized the outro of the version of this song that features in the Verona video, and being played by the large orchestra it sounded really amazing ! And why should Jim&Charlie have to turn down an offer like playing at the Proms ? Apparently they really wanted to do something to enjoy themselves after finishing the new album and before starting the promotion of the release in February '98 and the next world tour. By the way, Jim admitted in an interview by a Belgian newspaper that he regrets turning down offers like playing in MTV's unplugged. It's also nice to see how positive the Belgian press is about the Minds' appearance at the Proms: all the reviews I read were very positive about SM's performance. One last thing: Kurt advised Jim to buy decent new shoes. Well, I advise Jim to look for a complete new wardrobe :-) he looked like a walking scarecrow. Wouter

Hello!

Simple Minds at the Proms. Why, oh Lord, why? I guess I must have asked
myself that question over and over again as I stood in Antwerp's 
Sportpaleis, enduring a kind of music I can hardly bear.
Debbie Harry helped swallow the bitter pill for a while but by the time 
Jim and Charlie eventually got on stage, I was yawning hard. One thing's 
certain: I really don't take after my opera-loving dad!
Having said that, I found an answer to my recurrent question only seconds 
after Alive and Kicking hit the room. Simple Minds songs played by an 
orchestra are definitely worth it. At least the opening track 
magnificently introduced by strings and the beautiful Belfast Child, which 
has never been more radiant and heart-choking. Oh boy, this is a classic 
number in every sense of the word! Someone, Somewhere in Summertime was not
such an appropriate choice for this kind of orchestration, probably because
it is so much guitar-based.
An all-time favourite of mine, it certainly touched my senses but I by far
prefer the band's original version, especially with Charlie's beautiful
introduction. In Antwerp, it was a pleasant song but it never reached the
climax we expected. Besides, the orchestra's abrupt ending was a big
failure. Finally, crowd-pleaser Don't You did just that, please the crowd,
which is after all one of the many goals of a rock concert! I won't argue
on the rights or wrongs of opting for Don't You in a 4-track set when so
many other songs would have fitted in more beautifully. What can I say?
The audience loved it,
sang, cheered, clapped... and so did I!

This all too short set obviously left us unsatisfied and aching for more.
So when's the next tour please?
