The Reds are a communist garage rock band from Denton, Texas. This is the second interview that I've done with them. This interview was with their bass player and it was done in May 1999. The pictures on this page were taken from the Makeroom Webzine.
SS: HOW'S THE 7 INCH DOING AS FAR AS SALES GO AND ALSO GIVE IT A PLUG FOR THE LOSERS THAT DON'T HAVE IT YET?
THE REDS: Turkey Baster pressed 500 copies of our split 7" with The Boozers and I think it's out of print. It's getting distributed in Germany and Sweden as well as in America. I also took 25 copies to Japan with me last winter and gave them away. The Plug: If you see the record in a bin somewhere, give it a listen. If you like it, steal it. Same goes for our new 7" on Little Deputy.
SS: YOU GUYS JUST WENT THROUGH A LINEUP CHANGE, HOW'S THAT WORKING OUT?
THE REDS: It's working out really, really well. The old members didn't want to practice very often and didn't seem too into it most of the time. They had another band they were more into and after one quit to spend more time with said band, we asked the other person to leave. Now we practice a lot more and enjoy hanging out, which wasn't always the case.
SS: HOW'S DENTON DOING, I HEARD A RUMOR THAT RUBBER GLOVES CLOSED DOWN?
THE REDS: Denton is Denton is Denton, which is about all I can say on that subject. Rubber Gloves is alive and well and has had many fine acts come through recently.
SS: WHAT WAS THE LAST SHOW YOU GUYS WENT TO? DID YOU LIKE IT?
THE REDS: The last show I saw was last Friday night when The Delta 72 brought their all-soul revue to Rubber Gloves. It was pretty good.
SS: WHAT WAS THE LAST RECORD YOU BOUGHT AND WHY DID YOU WANT IT?
THE REDS: Well, last night I bought a stack of old 45's for 50 cents apiece at Recycled Books, a huge used record/book store on the town square. Some of the highlights include The Kingsmen, Henry Mancini, The Gentrys and Little Peggy March. I wanted some of them because I love these songs but you only here it on the oldies station, others because I had never heard of them but they looked pretty interesting. I can spend hours looking through used record bins.
SS: WHY SHOULD A PERSON WHO HAS NEVER HEARD YOUR BAND, GO TO YOUR SHOW OR BUY YOUR STUFF?
THE REDS: Because we play rock and roll, plus we'll make you shake your ass.
SS: WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR THE REST OF 1999?
THE REDS: Next week we leave on our first tour with our friends The Chop-Saki's. This tour will take us to exotic locales throughout the midwest and we're planning to visit the east coast in late August with The Boozers. In late September or early October we want to go play in Japan.
SS: YOU GUYS HAVE ANSWERED THIS IN YOUR PREVIOUS INTERVIEW BUT JUST THE SAME, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF SPINAL TAP?
THE REDS: I haven't seen Spinal Tap since the last interview, but if I gain any new insight I'll let you know.
