THE INTERVIEW
A Recent Interview with Suffer for Sound
Excerpt from the August 98 issue of Local Musician magazine....
The driving forces behind Suffer for Sound are two brothers, J.D. and Steve Sundstrom. These local musicians have been making music together, on and off, for about ten years. However, the road to non-fame and poverty hasn't always been easy for these two stalwart musicians.
Local Musician: Suffer for Sound? What's with the name?
J.D.: I think it really captures what Steve and I go through as we try to create each new song. It ain't easy. It's not like running down to the grocery store and buying a loaf of bread. It takes time to write a really good song. At least two or three hours.
Steve: Furthermore, Suffer for Sound is an homage to one of the all-time great rock and roll bands, the Tubes. "Suffer for Sound" is the title of a song that appeared on the Tubes' final recording for A&M records. The company to this day has not released this brilliant album. It's a frickin' shame.
Local Musician: So how long have you guys been into music?
Steve: Pretty much all of our lives. When J.D. was about fifteen, he started coming up with little songs that we would sing to our family at the various gatherings throughout the year. It wasn't long before we were both encouraged to pickup instruments. J.D. really struggled, but I naturally gravitated towards any stringed instrument. At age seven, I toured Italy, Spain, and Portugal under the tutelage of the late great Rinaldo Valencia, master guitarrista.
J.D.: I pretty much hated Steve during his "glory" years. However, when the temporary paralysis in his right hand set in, I couldn't help but feel terrible for him. Here he was with a multi-million dollar guitar string endorsement deal on the table and, all of a sudden, his world fell apart.
Steve: Yah. It pretty much sucked. Brooke Shields wouldn't return my calls. I had to hitch-hike back to the states and then I hopped railroad cars until I got back to Utah. (Pauses for a moment) I'd do it all over again if I could though.
Local Musicians: Your songs are pretty amusing. Tell me the story behind "Stupid Stocking Stuffer".
J.D.: I don't think the song is funny at all. We got fruit for Christmas. End of freakin' story. Ha ha. Next question.
Local Musician: Has the band ever performed live?
Steve: We have been offered opportunity after opportunity but the timing just hasn't felt right in each case. I mean there are so many things that demand our constant attention, such as the herd of wild hyenas that we raise in our backyard, that we just haven't been able to get the band together to hit the road. J.D. also tends to vomit whenever he sings in public...so that's a problem as well.
Local Musician: Well...what's next for the band?
J.D.: Both Steve and I agree that the band's next album will be a "concept" album detailing the life and times of one of America's finest actors, Don Knotts. We have also been consulting with some very high profile Hollywood producers who have indicated that they would like to see the album turned into a play or film like "Tommy". We'd like to see our good friend, Emilio Estevez in the lead role.
Steve: In addition, we are still working on obtaining the world's record for the largest ball of twine. This takes about 8 hours a day...so we're pretty busy.
