What We Believe (As a Collective)

It has been my experience that when one is asked for his belief on a subject, his opinion is based on the views of society. It almost seems as though society forms a subconscious collective of beliefs and opinions. When any one person is asked about his idea of religion, events in media, and events in history, the answers given all translate to the same meaning.

One can be very defensive if questioned of his religion, yet he is quite gullible when being told about his god. Ones gullibilty almost disappears, though, when new ideas are introduced, or ideas that contrast with popular belief. In the eyes of society (the collective), if a person isn't an exact clone of the rest of the flock, that person is bad. This is a rule that society seems to function in accordance to.

Media also weighs heavily in the opinion making of society. In newspapers, and news reports, everything is edited to show one side of a situation, usually the bad side. The media is such an important influence because people believe everything the news tells them. Society should be more carefull of what it takes to be true as a result of this factor.

Even in history, it has been rarethat people have stood up for themselves, although, it has always proven to be for the better. Rosa Parks stood up for herself and helped to end segregation throughout America. John Scopes taught the controversial theory of Charles Darwin at a time when the idea that humans descended from apes was ludicrous and sacreligous. It was John Kennedy who said, "Too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."
