- (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? (Epic)
- When Oasis became the fastest-selling debut act of all time in England with the release of 'Definitely Maybe', its collective ego soared right up with the sales figures. While the band's arrogant, self-made comparisons to the Fab Four was fuel for harsh criticism, the cocksure, Manchester five-piece delivered an album of ambitious, distinctive songwriting and majestic production. On '(What's The Story)...', the boys put their money where their mouth is, showing off with an album full of classic melodies and swaggering rhythms that make the indisputable Lennon-McCartney influences an important part of the package ("She's Electric," "Don't Look Back In Anger") instead of a by-product of their ego. There are more songs to appreciate here than on Oasis's debut, and the album's flavourful pop songs are much healthier. Swirling melodies and crunching guitars lead "Hello" over Liam Gallagher's slinky vocals, and the record's neo-classic rock feel is a progression from its punkier and overblown predecessor.
- The album's first single, "Morning Glory," fights to keep its head above the immense, almost apocalyptic, wall of guitars, while "Roll With It" and the dreamy "Cast No Shadow" show how well the group's songwriting works in various settings. Catchy and sweet without sounding derivative, Oasis has made one of this year's finest pop gems. Shake it up, baby: "Wonderwall" and "Hey Now!"
